The short answer for EagleBank Arena
EagleBank Arena is George Mason University's arena on its Fairfax campus, about six miles west of the Capital Beltway off Braddock Road. It holds about 10,000 for basketball and hosts Mason men's and women's basketball, touring concerts, comedy, family shows and dozens of Northern Virginia graduations each spring. For a Mason game, the best seats are along the sidelines in the lower rows of the bowl; for a concert, the sections angled toward the stage beat the far end of the room.
If the name does not ring a bell, the building probably will. It opened in 1985 as the Patriot Center and carried that name for 30 years. In July 2015 EagleBank, a Bethesda, Maryland, bank, bought the naming rights, and the arena became EagleBank Arena. Older ticket stubs, maps and locals still use the Patriot Center name; it is the same building at the same address, 4500 Patriot Circle.
The university owns the arena. Monumental Sports & Entertainment has managed it day to day since 2010.
How the seating bowl is laid out
EagleBank Arena is a single, continuous bowl rather than a stack of separate decks. Seats rise from the court in one ring of 100-numbered sections, so there is no true upper level hanging over the lower one. Rows near the floor use single letters (A, B, C and so on); farther up, rows switch to doubled letters such as AA and DD, which is the clearest clue that you are in the upper half of a section. Fan photos on A View From My Seat show rows from A through DD in sections such as 101, 103, 110 and 113.
What the section numbers tell you
George Mason's own 2026–27 seating announcement is the most reliable guide to the numbering. It places the Mason Maniaks student section in sections 104 through 109, beside the Green Machine pep band, and a new Family Zone in the upper portions of sections 123 and 124. New baseline loge seats and a Courtside Club sit behind the baseline at the east end.
The floor
For concerts, a floor section is added in front of the stage. Tickets list it as Floor plus a number, and its size changes with each production.
Best seats for Mason basketball
Because the bowl is compact, almost every chair has a usable view of the court. The difference is angle and distance.
- Best overall: the sideline sections near center court, in the single-letter rows below the AA break. You see both baskets without turning your head.
- Most energy: seats near sections 104–109, where the Maniaks and the band stand for most of the game. Expect to stand with them.
- Families: the Family Zone in the upper rows of 123 and 124, which Mason sets aside for family ticket offers and entry-level prices starting in 2026–27.
- Closest: the new baseline loge seats behind the east basket, sold as season tickets with access to the Courtside Club.
The seats to think twice about are the top doubled-letter rows in the corners, which reviewers describe as steep, and aisle seats beside floor tunnels, where foot traffic and the tunnel opening can interrupt the view. One fan on A View From My Seat notes that a seat in section 114, row AA, sits next to a floor entrance that blocked part of the view.
Concerts, comedy and family shows
Most concerts use an end-stage setup, with the stage at one end of the floor and seats on the other three sides. In that arrangement the best seats are:
- the floor, if you want to be close and do not mind standing behind other fans;
- the side sections nearest the stage, in the lettered rows, which sit above the floor crowd and closer than they look on a map;
- the sections straight across from the stage, which show the full lighting design and both video screens. A fan in section 108, row S, reported a clear look at both side screens.
Avoid the sections immediately beside the stage if the production uses large side screens or speaker stacks, since the angle can hide part of the set. For comedy and family shows such as Disney On Ice, which set the arena's family-show gross record in 2022, the head-on sections are worth the extra cost because the action is concentrated in one spot.
The building's attendance record for a concert is 10,356, set by Phish, which shows how far the floor can stretch beyond the 10,000 basketball figure.
Parking, Metro and getting to campus
The arena sits on a large suburban campus, so most fans drive. According to the arena's directions page, event parking in the surrounding lots opens three hours before the start time, and for most ticketed events a parking fee is included in the ticket price. Accessible parking is next to the South Entry. Expect police and traffic marshals to direct cars on busy nights, and plan extra time on Braddock Road.
Metro
There is no direct rail stop. The arena recommends taking Metro's Orange Line to Vienna, then the CUE bus to George Mason University, followed by a five- to ten-minute walk across campus. The venue warns that no public transportation leaves directly from the arena after events, and taxis do not wait outside at the end of a show, so arrange your return trip in advance.
Bag policy and entry rules
As of 2026, EagleBank Arena enforces a clear-bag policy: clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bags no larger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches, or a one-gallon clear zip-top bag. A small non-clear clutch or purse up to 5 by 7 inches is also allowed. Medical and parenting bags are considered case by case with extra screening.
- Everyone walks through metal detectors, and all bags are searched.
- Outside food and drink, cans, coolers, luggage, drones, selfie sticks and noisemakers are prohibited, and prohibited items cannot be stored at the arena.
- Signs larger than 18 by 18 inches, or on sticks, are not allowed.
- Concert doors usually open one hour before showtime.
- Tickets are mobile through Ticketmaster, and screenshots are not accepted.
- Everyone age 2 and older needs a ticket.
Rules change, so check the arena's visitor information before you go.
From Patriot Center to EagleBank Arena
Construction began in 1982, financed through a university revenue-bond package approved by the Virginia General Assembly, and the building replaced a 3,000-seat gym. HOK Sport and Mosley Architects designed it. Mason held graduation there in May 1985, and the official opening came on October 4, 1985, with a Washington Bullets preseason game against the New York Knicks that marked Patrick Ewing's professional debut.
A 10 million dollar renovation in 2009 added concession stands, a hospitality area and a better main concourse, and a new center-hung scoreboard arrived in 2012. The arena has hosted the first CAA men's and women's tournaments, the UFC's first event in Virginia in January 2010, and Game 3 of the 2018 WNBA Finals. The naming change to EagleBank Arena took effect in July 2015, and Mason's 2026–27 upgrades add the Courtside Club, the Patriot Lounge, a Kids Zone and a beer garden on the east concourse. The arena's Wikipedia entry covers more of its history.
