No seats to pick: choose tier, days and campsite as one purchase

No assigned seats, so your choice of tier, days and campsite does the work a seat map usually does. Settle those three before the lineup.

Choosing Your Access Level First

Festivals rarely sell assigned seats, so the decision that replaces "which section" is "which tier, which days and where to sleep." Get that combination right before you look at set times. General admission covers every stage and suits most people; VIP pays off at hot, crowded, multi-day events; a camping pass decides whether your weekend starts with a walk or a long drive.

The audience for this format is big. In the National Endowment for the Arts' 2022 survey, 21 percent of US adults attended an outdoor festival performance, and parks, pavilions and amphitheaters drew more arts attendees than any other kind of venue. Interest keeps rising: Luminate's Live Music 2026 report put festival attendance intent at 23 percent of US respondents in early 2026, with the share calling festivals a good or great value up from 74 to 82 percent since mid-2024. Intent is not the same as a purchase, but the trend points toward more competition for passes.

Tier Ladder: From GA to Tables

Each festival brands its levels differently, but the structure repeats:

  • General admission (GA): the grounds and every stage. Most fans go this way, and at a well-run event it is plenty.
  • GA+: where sold, a middle step with a dedicated entrance, shaded lounges and nicer restrooms.
  • VIP: viewing areas set aside near the main stages, private bars and food, and air-conditioned restrooms. Its value peaks at a sweltering three- or four-day festival and drops at a one-day city event where you will roam between stages anyway.
  • Tables and hospitality: a tier above VIP at some boutique events. Palm Tree Music Festival, for instance, sells Palm Club tables with raised sightlines.
  • Camping: sold separately at destination festivals, from tent sites and car camping (sleeping beside your vehicle) up to prebuilt glamping tents and RV spots. Coachella introduced camping in 2003.

Buy the campsite in the same session as the pass. Camping can sell out on its own, and a pass without a bed nearby means a daily commute from the closest town.

One Day or the Whole Weekend

Many destination festivals open with weekend passes only, and single-day tickets, if any, follow the daily lineup announcement.

  • Weekend pass: the better fit if you are traveling, camping or following artists scattered across the schedule. It usually costs less per day.
  • Single day: the better fit if one headliner is the reason, you live close by, or a two-weekend festival has one day that suits your calendar.
  • Which weekend: Coachella and New Orleans Jazz Fest both span two weekends. Coachella books essentially the same lineup for each, while Jazz Fest prints a separate schedule for every day, so a Jazz Fest day ticket buys that day's acts only.

Wristband Resale: Rules That Differ

  • Delivery. Many large festivals issue RFID wristbands (bands with a chip that gate scanners read), mailed weeks ahead or handed out at a pickup point. A resale order is done only when the band is in your hands, so delivery timing carries more weight than it does with a phone ticket.
  • Activation. Plenty of festivals require online registration before gates open. Once a band is on your wrist, do not cut or loosen it; tampered bands are commonly voided at entry.
  • Fixed access. A GA band will not open the VIP gate, and a Saturday band will not scan on Sunday. Confirm tier, day and any camping or parking add-on on the listing.
  • Price swings. A strong lineup reveal tends to lift resale prices, and festivals that do not sell out can soften near the end, though forecasts and a sold-out campground can move prices in either direction.

Cost is still the main obstacle, but it is easing for younger fans. Luminate found the share of Gen Z live music attendees naming ticket cost as a barrier dropped from 75 percent in early 2024 to 57 percent in early 2026, while the share attending two concerts a year rose from 29 to 37 percent. Reserved Seat backs every order with a 100% guarantee.

Eight US Festivals, Briefly

Coachella

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has filled the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, since 1999, across two back-to-back three-day weekends in April. Sabrina Carpenter, Justin Bieber, Karol G and Anyma headlined in 2026.

Lollapalooza

Perry Farrell launched it as a touring show in 1991; it took up permanent residence in Chicago's Grant Park in 2005. Four days in late July or early August draw an estimated 400,000 people.

Bonnaroo

Since 2002, Great Stage Park, a 700-acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee, has hosted this camping-first festival, usually over four days beginning the second Thursday of June. Severe weather and flooding forced organizers to cancel the 2025 edition after it had begun.

Ultra Music Festival

Three days of electronic music at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami each late March, timed with Miami Music Week. It has been 18-and-over since 2014.

New Orleans Jazz Fest

Formally the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, it has run since 1970 at the Fair Grounds Race Course over the last weekend of April and the first weekend of May. A nonprofit foundation runs it, and the stages cover jazz, blues, gospel, zydeco, Cajun and brass band music.

Palm Tree Music Festival

Palm Tree Crew's boutique series visits destination towns. The 2026–27 schedule lists Napa and Montecito in October 2026 and Aspen in February 2027.

Electric Forest

An electronic and jam-band weekend at the Double JJ Resort in Rothbury, Michigan, in late June, on the grounds of the former Rothbury Festival. The 14th edition runs June 25 to 28, 2026.

Lights All Night

A two-night electronic dance music event at Fair Park in Dallas in late December. The December 30 and 31, 2026, edition is its 16th anniversary.

Travel, Policies and the Event Guides

A festival is a trip as much as a show. Luminate notes that music tourism is growing, since seeing an artist in another city can cost less than the hometown date. Book lodging when you buy the pass, plan on shuttles or rideshare zones instead of nearby parking, and expect rules on bags, hydration packs and chairs that vary by event and change each year. Check the festival's current policy before you go.

Each Reserved Seat festival guide covers the location and dates, lineup history, ticket tiers, transportation and camping, packing and dated policies. First-timers should also read the first-concert guide for the basics that carry over: ear protection, a charged phone with tickets loaded and a meeting spot if the group gets separated. Lineups and rules are published on each festival's own website, such as Coachella.com.

Beyond the Big Names

More festivals have their own guides. Austin City Limits Music Festival fills Zilker Park over two October weekends. BottleRock Napa Valley owns Memorial Day weekend in Napa. Boston Calling is set to return in June 2027 after sitting out 2026. Aftershock Festival brings rock and metal to Sacramento every fall. Beyond Wonderland stages electronic editions in Southern California, at The Gorge and around Chicago. Broccoli City Festival presents hip-hop and R&B around Washington, D.C., in a format that shifts from year to year. Camp Bisco, the jam and electronic weekend in Scranton, Pennsylvania, has been dormant since 2019.

Overseas and off the grid, Burning Man raises Black Rock City in the Nevada desert each summer under ticketing rules unlike any other event here. AfrikaBurn is its South African cousin in the Tankwa Karoo, AfroFuture (previously Afrochella) takes over Accra, Ghana, in late December, and the Cape Town International Jazz Festival has been a two-night staple since 2000. The guides to festival ticket types and festival packing apply to nearly all of them.

Frequently asked questions

When is a VIP festival pass worth it?

Mostly at hot, crowded festivals lasting three or four days, where reserved viewing areas, private bars and better restrooms make a real difference. At a one-day city festival, GA is usually enough.

Is a weekend pass cheaper than buying single days?

Usually, on a per-day basis. A single day still makes sense if one headliner is the draw or you live close enough to come and go.

What happens if I cut or loosen my festival wristband?

Festivals commonly void tampered wristbands at the gate. Leave the band fitted as issued, and register it online if the festival requires it.

Is camping included with a festival pass?

Usually not. At Bonnaroo, and for camping at Coachella, campsites are sold separately and can sell out on their own, so buy both at once.

Which festival weekend should I choose at Coachella?

Either. Coachella books essentially the same lineup on both April weekends, so pick by dates and travel. New Orleans Jazz Fest differs, with a separate schedule each day.

Can teenagers attend Ultra Music Festival?

No. Ultra has admitted only fans 18 and older since 2014. Other festivals set their own age rules, so check before buying.
