Albany's stages and the seat to target at each
Albany runs its ticketed events through a compact downtown: MVP Arena for big concerts, Siena basketball and arena football, two historic stages, the Palace Theatre and The Egg, for seated shows, and Saratoga Springs to the north for summer concerts and racing. Here is the short answer on where to sit at each.
- MVP Arena, end-stage concert: lower sections along the sides nearest the stage beat deep floor rows; the upper level straight across from the stage shows the whole production.
- MVP Arena, basketball: lower-bowl sideline seats are the prime choice; corners cost less and lose only a little angle.
- Palace Theatre: front-balcony rows often outperform the back of the orchestra, where the upper level hangs overhead.
- The Egg: both rooms are small, so nearly any seat is close; book for the act, not the row.
- SPAC: a reserved seat under the roof buys a covered, guaranteed view; the lawn is a cheaper, arrive-early gamble.
Inside MVP Arena: concerts, Siena and the Firebirds
The building on South Pearl Street has had four names since its January 30, 1990 debut: Knickerbocker Arena at first, Pepsi Arena from 1997 to 2006, then Times Union Center through 2021, and MVP Arena from 2022 on. If an old map or stub uses one of the earlier names, it means the same room. The county is the owner; ASM Global handles operations.
Seating totals vary by event. Concerts top out near 15,357, basketball near 15,229, and hockey or lacrosse near 14,236. No indoor room in the Capital Region is larger, so a major tour here pulls buyers from well beyond the city.
Choosing seats
For an end-stage show (the stage at one end of the floor), flat floor seats lose sightlines quickly once you are past the first rows, so the raised side sections nearest the stage usually deliver more. For basketball, a sideline seat in the lower bowl is worth the premium; a corner seat is the value play. The floor layout shifts with each tour, so compare any resale listing against the arena's own map for that event.
Past headliners include two NCAA hockey championships (the Frozen Four, in 1992 and 2001), the 1992 Royal Rumble wrestling event and the 2019 arena football title game, ArenaBowl XXXII.
Palace, The Egg, Proctors and theREP
Palace Theatre
The Palace, a John Eberson design on Clinton Avenue, first lit its marquee on October 23, 1931, and holds 2,844 people. Since 1984 a nonprofit has managed it, programming upward of 150 nights annually: rock, comedy, ballet, touring Broadway and the resident Albany Symphony Orchestra. Because the hall is so large, the back of the orchestra ends up under the balcony overhang, which makes the front balcony the smarter purchase for many shows.
The Egg
The egg-shaped landmark at the Empire State Plaza dates to 1978 and contains two rooms: the Kitty Carlisle Hart Theatre, with 982 seats, and the Lewis A. Swyer Theatre, with 450. Expect folk, rock, comedy and dance. In rooms this intimate, the performer matters far more than the row.
Proctors, Schenectady
Vaudeville impresario F. F. Proctor opened this theater in 1926. Today it is where the big Broadway tours land in the Capital Region, so Albany audiences often drive over for them.
Capital Repertory Theatre
The area's resident professional company, known as theREP, has a home on North Pearl Street, a building bought jointly with Proctors in 2017.
SPAC lawn or pavilion, and race days at Saratoga
Head north on I-87 to reach Saratoga Springs, the center of summer ticket demand for the whole region. Neither of its two headline venues operates year-round.
Saratoga Performing Arts Center
SPAC sits inside Saratoga Spa State Park and first opened on July 9, 1966. Covered seating totals 5,103, and the hillside behind it can take roughly 20,000 more. Residencies anchor the classical side: New York City Ballet for one July week and the Philadelphia Orchestra for three August weeks. Popular tours (rock, pop, country) come through Live Nation. Farm Aid has been staged here twice, in 2013 and 2024.
The seat decision is simple. A reserved seat guarantees a roof overhead and a fixed view. The lawn has no assigned spots, so your sightline is set by your arrival time. Pack a blanket, and read SPAC's current chair rules first.
Saratoga Race Course
Racing here dates to August 3, 1863. The season is short: roughly 40 days of cards between mid-July and Labor Day. The Travers Stakes, a Saratoga fixture since 1864, is the day everyone wants. For three years the Belmont Stakes also moved to Saratoga during construction at Belmont Park, sending June demand far past its usual level. Rooms in town are hard to find and costly in racing season, which is why plenty of visitors book in Albany instead and commute.
Siena, the Firebirds and the ValleyCats
None of the NFL, NBA, NHL or MLB play in the Capital Region, so fans after big-league games typically ride the train to New York City. What Albany does offer:
- Siena Saints men's basketball: MVP Arena remains the Saints' home court after a lease renewal in December 2024. Watch for the Albany Cup, the crosstown series with UAlbany.
- Albany Firebirds: the Arena Football One club went undefeated, 12 wins and no losses, in 2025 and took the first Arena Crown in league history. Its 2026 schedule had six home games between April 11 and July 19.
- Tri-City ValleyCats: a Frontier League baseball team based in Troy, playing at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, which opened on the Hudson Valley Community College campus in 2002. It has 6,500 seats and a lawn that holds roughly 1,500 more.
Lacrosse is gone. In an August 19, 2025 announcement, the National Lacrosse League said the FireWolves were leaving for Oshawa, Ontario, ahead of 2026. Older listings showing lacrosse at the arena are stale.
Planning an Albany trip by month
- November through March: Siena basketball, holiday programming at the Palace and Broadway tours at Proctors. Snowstorms can bog down the interstates, so leave early.
- April through July: Firebirds home games plus a busy spring for arena concerts.
- June through early September: baseball in Troy, the classical and pop seasons at SPAC, and racing from mid-July.
- September and October: autumn arena tours, and both downtown theaters open new seasons.
Demand jumps hardest for three things: a headline tour at MVP Arena, Travers weekend, and SPAC's largest summer concerts.
Trains, garages and walking between venues
Downtown is small. Stay near the Empire State Plaza and the arena, the Palace and The Egg are all a few minutes apart.
- Rail: trains stop at Albany–Rensselaer, on the east bank of the Hudson roughly 1.5 miles from downtown. As of 2020 it was the ninth-busiest stop in Amtrak's system, and Empire Service runs to New York City. A taxi or rideshare covers the last leg.
- Driving: exit I-787 for the arena. Its own garage connects directly to the back of the building (use 1 Market Street for navigation), and pricing depends on the event.
- Meters: per the arena, as of 2026 downtown meters cost nothing on weekday evenings after 5 and all weekend. Confirm posted signs and the arena's parking page before you leave the car.
- Saratoga: drive, and budget extra time on Travers weekend and big SPAC nights.
Where to eat near each venue
Restaurants on the blocks around MVP Arena get crowded on Siena and concert nights; book ahead for a proper dinner. The Palace is at Clinton and Pearl on downtown's northern edge, a short stroll from the plaza hotels. For The Egg, the plaza's garages and a downtown dinner make an easy pairing. In Saratoga Springs, most restaurants line Broadway, the main street.
Each venue sets its own bag and entry rules, so check the current policy for the one on your ticket. Every Reserved Seat order is backed by a 100% guarantee.
