Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
New York seat choices, the quick version
Three rules cover most New York City tickets. In an arena, buy the side of the lower bowl rather than the seats behind an end stage. In a Broadway house or a concert hall, the center front mezzanine often beats the side or rear orchestra. At a comedy club, pick the show time before anything else, because each show seats separately.
After that, think about the train. Many of the metro area's teams and venues are outside Manhattan, some in New Jersey and on Long Island, so the trip can matter as much as the section.
- Sports: nine big-league clubs; tickets for the two baseball teams, the Knicks, the Rangers and the Nets face the stiffest local competition.
- Concerts: arena tours split between Madison Square Garden in Midtown and Barclays Center in Brooklyn; stadium tours go to Yankee Stadium, Citi Field or MetLife Stadium.
- Broadway: 41 houses of 500 or more seats, eight performances a week.
- Comedy: basement showcase rooms through theater-size specials.
There is no real off-season here, just a change in what is playing.
Arenas, stadiums and halls: seats that pay off
Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center
Four buildings have carried the Garden name; today's version dates to 1968. Capacity is 19,812 for the Knicks, 18,006 for the Rangers and as many as roughly 22,000 for a concert, and Billy Joel's once-a-month residency ran there for a decade, ending in July 2024. Brooklyn's arena, opened with Jay-Z in 2012, fits around 20,000 for a show. The rule at both is the same: sit along the sides of the lower bowl. Anything straight behind an end stage is either flagged as obstructed or held off sale.
Stadiums
Stadium-size tours land at one of three fields; the Mets' park, for instance, has hosted Paul McCartney (2009) and Beyoncé (2016). For a smaller open-air night, Forest Hills Stadium, built for tennis in 1923 and holding around 14,000, runs concerts each summer. Outdoor shows depend on weather, so read the rain policy before buying.
Theaters and concert halls
- Radio City Music Hall at Rockefeller Center opened in 1932 and seats 5,960.
- Beacon Theatre, at Broadway and 74th Street, has 2,894 seats over three levels. Over 25 years, from 1989 to 2014, the Allman Brothers Band logged 238 nights on its stage.
- Kings Theatre in Flatbush, Brooklyn, began as a 1929 movie palace and came back in 2015 after restoration, with 3,250 seats.
- Carnegie Hall, open since 1891, does most of its business in Stern Auditorium, which seats 2,790.
In these older halls, the rear orchestra sits under a balcony overhang that muffles sound and clips the top of the stage. The first rows of the first balcony avoid both problems.
The teams, the buildings and the borough lines
First-time visitors often assume every New York team plays in Manhattan. Several do not.
- Football, in New Jersey: the New York Giants and the New York Jets share the 2010 stadium in East Rutherford, capacity about 82,500. The Giants go back to 1925 and count eight NFL championships, including four Super Bowl wins.
- Baseball in the Bronx: the New York Yankees, owners of 27 World Series trophies, moved into their current 46,537-seat park in 2009. The MLS club New York City FC plays there too while its Willets Point stadium is built, with an opening reported for 2027.
- Baseball in Queens: the New York Mets play in Flushing Meadows in a 41,922-seat ballpark that also debuted in 2009.
- Midtown: the New York Knicks and New York Rangers both call the Garden home.
- Brooklyn: the Brooklyn Nets and the WNBA's New York Liberty play where Atlantic Avenue meets Flatbush.
- Long Island: the New York Islanders moved into UBS Arena, Elmont, in 2021.
- Newark: the New Jersey Devils skate at Prudential Center.
For a last-minute game, pick one of the two arenas with a subway station underneath. The Meadowlands demands the most planning, because its train runs only when something is scheduled.
Comedy clubs: showcases, show times and closures
Most New York clubs run showcases: five to seven comics, each doing roughly 10 to 15 minutes. The lineup changes nightly, so you are buying the room and the time slot more than a single name. Weekend shows at the established clubs sell out first, and the late weekend shows are often the easiest seats to find.
- Comedy Cellar on MacDougal Street in Greenwich Village dates to 1981. Shows run in two spaces, the cramped original basement and the roomier Village Underground nearby, and weekend nights pack in as many as ten shows.
- Gotham Comedy Club, a Chelsea fixture since 1996, has occupied its Art Deco space on West 23rd since 2006, and the Comedy Central series Live at Gotham was recorded in it.
- Comic Strip Live on Second Avenue, the Upper East Side's club since 1976, gave early stage time to Eddie Murphy, Jerry Seinfeld and Chris Rock.
- Stand Up NY (est. 1986) relocated in 2020 to a roughly 120-seat Times Square-area room on West 46th.
- Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre brought improv and sketch back to Manhattan in September 2024 with a new East 14th Street stage.
One correction to older guides: Carolines on Broadway shut down when 2022 ended. Big-name comics book the Beacon, the Music Hall or the Garden, and every November the comedy festival spreads shows across the five boroughs. Check drink minimums and age limits in the ticket terms.
Broadway seats: orchestra, mezzanine and timing
What makes a theater Broadway is size and address: at least 500 seats, located in the district bounded roughly by West 41st and West 53rd streets on either side of Broadway, with Lincoln Center's Vivian Beaumont as the one exception. Forty-one houses meet that test, and Tony eligibility depends on it. Seasonal attendance is around 12 million, and roughly a third of buyers live locally.
The seat rule is simple: in most houses, the center front mezzanine shows the whole stage picture and often beats the side orchestra, where you watch at an angle. The hardest weeks are the holiday stretch from Thanksgiving to New Year's and school breaks, and the hardest night is Saturday. Tuesday through Thursday, and the slow weeks of January and early February, leave more choice.
What is playing in New York, by season
- Spring: baseball begins in the Bronx and Queens; hockey and basketball seasons wind down and can run into May and June with playoffs; many new Broadway shows open before the Tony Awards.
- Summer: the ballparks, stadium tours, WNBA nights in Brooklyn and open-air concerts in Queens.
- Late August into September: tennis takes over Flushing Meadows for the US Open; in 2026 the main draw was played from August 30 through September 13.
- Autumn: football weekends in the Meadowlands, basketball and hockey openers in October, then November's comedy festival.
- Holidays: the Rockettes' Radio City Christmas Spectacular plays from early November to early January (opening November 4 in 2026), and Broadway has its most crowded weeks of the year.
Overlap seasons, especially late October and December, sell out rooms and prime dates soonest.
Trains to every venue, and a base near each
Driving is slow and parking scarce, so rail is the default.
- Madison Square Garden: built on top of Penn Station, so Amtrak, LIRR, NJ Transit and six subway lines (A, C, E, 1, 2, 3) all deliver you to the door. For dinner, walk a few blocks to Koreatown or the Flatiron District.
- Barclays Center: ten subway lines stop at the station beneath it, and the LIRR terminates at Atlantic Terminal next door. Fort Greene and Park Slope are walkable for a meal.
- Yankee Stadium: the 4, B and D trains stop at 161st Street, and Metro-North has its own station at East 153rd.
- Citi Field and the US Open: both are served by the 7 train and the Port Washington Branch of the LIRR at Mets–Willets Point.
- MetLife Stadium: on game and concert days, change to the NJ Transit Meadowlands shuttle train at Secaucus, or ride a Coach USA bus out of Port Authority. Schedules are on NJ Transit's Meadowlands page.
Staying in Midtown keeps the Garden, the Theater District, Radio City and Carnegie Hall on foot, while an NFL game from there involves two changes in each direction. When an arena empties, the station underneath clogs; walk to the next stop instead. As of fall 2026, Brooklyn's arena prohibits backpacks and bags bigger than 10 x 6 x 2 inches, and the football stadium requires clear bags on NFL days; rules shift, so check first. Frequently asked questions
Is the mezzanine or the orchestra better on Broadway?
Usually the front mezzanine, center. It frames the whole production, while side orchestra seats watch from an angle. Front-center orchestra is closer but is the most contested area.
Which teams play outside New York City?
Four do: both NFL teams play in East Rutherford, New Jersey, the Devils play in Newark, and the Islanders play in Elmont on Long Island.
What seats should you avoid at Madison Square Garden concerts?
Skip anything directly behind the stage, which is listed as obstructed if it is sold at all. Lower-bowl sides are the better buy.
How do comedy club tickets work in New York?
Most clubs run several showcases a night with five to seven comics, and each show is seated separately. Book a specific show time, and expect weekend shows at the best-known clubs to sell out first.
Is Carolines on Broadway still open?
No. Carolines shut its doors when 2022 ended. Established rooms today include the Comedy Cellar, Gotham Comedy Club, Comic Strip Live and Stand Up NY.
What is the best way to reach MetLife Stadium?
On event days, transfer at Secaucus to NJ Transit's Meadowlands train, or take a Coach USA bus from Port Authority in Midtown.
