It is home to the Buffalo Sabres.
Buffalo's arena, formerly HSBC Arena and First Niagara Center
KeyBank Center is the downtown Buffalo arena near Canalside and the waterfront, home of the Buffalo Sabres (NHL) since 1996 and the Buffalo Bandits of the National Lacrosse League. It is the largest indoor arena in Western New York, seating 19,070 for hockey, and it books concerts, wrestling and NCAA tournament basketball. The best hockey seats are the lower-level sections between the blue lines, 105 and 117; at the club level, 207 and 218 are the center-ice picks.
The building has had four names. It opened as Marine Midland Arena in 1996, became HSBC Arena in 2000 and First Niagara Center in 2011, and has been KeyBank Center since September 19, 2016, after KeyBank bought First Niagara. In July 2025, the Sabres and KeyBank extended the naming deal through the 2035–36 season. Seating charts under any of the older names still match today's layout.
Seating layout: 100, 200 club and 300 levels
Section ranges come from the RateYourSeats section directory; the Sabres' A–Z guide and Ticketmaster's arena guide confirm the three-level structure, with the club on the 200 level.
100 level: sections 100–123
The lower bowl wraps the ice. Sections 105 and 117 sit between the blue lines on opposite sides. The 100 level also has the entrance to the 1970 Club, reserved for Signature Seat holders at Sabres games, and the Labatt Blue Zone.
200 level: sections 200–226 (club)
The middle level is the club level, with 200 Club Seats whose holders use the KeyBank Club. Sections 207 and 218 are its center-ice sections. Because the club level is sold as a premium product, these seats combine a high-enough angle to see plays develop with in-club amenities.
300 level: sections 300–327
The upper level runs from 300 to 327, with 306 and 320 between the blue lines. The Sabres added a row of seats behind the last row of the 300 level in 1999, and the 2012 expansion that brought capacity to 19,070 mainly added a row to the 200 level.
Suites and boxes
The Suite Level holds 80 suites and the Lawley Party Suite. Seating maps also show Harbor Club boxes and studio boxes.
Best seats for Sabres hockey, Bandits lacrosse and concerts
Sabres hockey
Center ice in 105 or 117, about 10 rows up, is the classic view: high enough to see over the glass and follow the puck across all three zones. The club sections 207 and 218 are many fans' favorite angle, slightly elevated with a full view of the ice. For value, the front rows of 306 and 320 keep the center-ice angle at a lower demand level. Sabres demand rises for weekend games, marquee opponents and, above all, playoff games, when resale supply tightens.
Bandits lacrosse
The Bandits play box lacrosse inside the boards on the arena floor, so the hockey advice holds: center sections, a few rows up, see both nets and the transition game best.
Concerts
For end-stage concerts (capacity about 18,500), the floor center and the lower sideline sections nearest the stage give the closest elevated views. The 100-level sections at the far end face the stage straight on.
Seats to avoid
- First rows behind the goals: the glass and netting distort the far end.
- Top rows of the 300-level corners: the longest view in the building.
- Seats beside or behind an end stage: partial views at concerts.
Parking and Metro Rail
As of 2026, limited game-day parking is sold in the KeyBank Center ramp on Illinois Street, the LECOM Harborcenter ramp on Perry Street, and arena surface lots between Michigan and Mississippi Streets. Parking for any event can be prepaid online through the arena, and lots nearby that are not run by the arena set their own rates. Accessible parking is on every level of both ramps.
NFTA Metro Rail is the easy alternative. Canalside station, formerly Erie Canal Harbor and before that Auditorium station, is near the arena and sits in the free-fare zone, so rides between Canalside and Fountain Plaza cost nothing. The new DL&W station on South Park Avenue opened in December 2025 as the first Metro Rail extension since 1985; a bridge from it into the arena's 100 level is planned but not yet built. The arena is also on two major bus routes. The LECOM Harborcenter, with a hotel and restaurants, connects to the arena by an elevated walkway.
Bag policy and entry rules
As of 2026, KeyBank Center does not allow bags, backpacks or purses. A clutch no larger than 4 by 6 by 1.5 inches is permitted after visual inspection, and medically necessary items and diaper bags are allowed after screening. A clear stadium bag does not qualify, so plan to use pockets. Check the Sabres' A–Z guide before you go, since concerts can set their own rules.
- Re-entry: not permitted.
- Cashless: concessions are cashless; Canadian currency is accepted at concessions and the Sabres Store.
- Smoking and vaping: not allowed anywhere in the facility.
- Accessible seating: on all levels, with a companion seat for each accessible seat and room for up to three companions.
History and big events
The arena opened on September 21, 1996, replacing Buffalo Memorial Auditorium, where the Sabres had played since 1970; it cost about 127.5 million dollars. Its first Sabres regular-season game came on October 12, 1996, and a month later its first scoreboard fell to the ice hours before a game, injuring no one. It hosted Games 3, 4 and 6 of the 1999 Stanley Cup Final, the 2003 and 2019 Frozen Fours, the 2011 World Junior Championship, NHL drafts in 1998, 2016 and 2026, and NCAA men's basketball tournament games eight times, most recently in 2026. A new center-hung video board and roof were installed in 2024. The Wikipedia entry covers more.
