Peoria Civic Center

About 11,000 for Bradley hoops · lower-bowl sideline is the pick

Downtown Peoria's civic center holds Carver Arena, home of Bradley basketball and the Rivermen, plus a 2,173-seat theater. Here is how to choose seats.

Carver Arena and the Peoria Civic Center

The Peoria Civic Center is the city-owned arena, theater and convention complex at 201 SW Jefferson Avenue in downtown Peoria, Illinois. Its arena is Carver Arena, so tickets listed as “Carver Arena at Peoria Civic Center” are for the arena rather than the theater. Carver Arena is home to Bradley Braves basketball and the Peoria Rivermen of the SPHL (minor league hockey), and it is central Illinois' main stop for concerts and touring shows. It seats 11,433 for basketball by Wikipedia's count (Bradley lists 11,060), 12,036 for concerts and 9,919 for hockey.

For a Bradley game, the best seats are the lower-bowl sideline sections near midcourt, about halfway up. For hockey, the glass seats put you inches from the play, and the elevated lower bowl along the sides shows the whole rink.

The arena opened with the complex in 1982 as the Peoria Civic Center Arena and took the Carver name around 2001. It honors Richard Carver, Peoria's mayor from 1973 to 1984, whose administration built the civic center. The complex's 2,173-seat theater now carries a sponsor name, the Prairie Home Alliance Theater, and hosts touring Broadway and smaller concerts.

How Carver Arena is laid out

Carver Arena has a two-level seating bowl around a floor that changes from basketball court to hockey rink to concert stage:

  • Lower bowl: the main ring of seats closest to the floor, including the best sideline views for basketball and hockey.
  • Glass seats: for Rivermen games, the front rows directly against the rink glass.
  • Upper bowl: the second level, the lowest-cost seats in the building.
  • Floor: used for concert seating or standing, depending on the show.
  • Lexus Club: a 300-capacity premium club inside the complex.

Section numbering varies with each event map, so match your section to the seating chart for your date. The Toyota gate is the main entrance and leads straight onto the arena concourse; other doors involve more walking.

Best seats for Bradley, Rivermen and concerts

Bradley basketball

Sit along the sidelines in the lower bowl, from the middle rows up, for a full view of the court and the benches. Behind-the-basket seats are cheaper but foreshorten the far end. Demand is highest for Missouri Valley Conference rivals: Bradley's single-game record, 11,444, came against Illinois State on January 24, 2007, and the 2006–07 season set the arena's season attendance record.

Rivermen hockey

The glass seats are the most exciting, but the low angle makes it hard to follow play at the far end. Lower-bowl seats along the side, several rows up, see the whole ice and the video board above it. Rivermen crowds rarely fill the building, so good seats are usually available close to game day.

Concerts

For an end-stage show, the center floor and the lower-bowl sections facing the stage are the clearest views; the side sections nearest the stage are close but angled. The upper bowl straight across from the stage is the value pick. Carver Arena has hosted Metallica, the Eagles, Elton John and KISS, and Bob Seger set its highest-grossing concert in January 2019.

Seats to avoid

  • Sections beside or behind an end stage: limited views.
  • Upper-bowl corners: the longest sightlines in the building.
  • Low rows behind a basket: the stanchion blocks part of the court.

Parking and entrances

As of 2026, the Civic Center runs two lots, both first come, first served and card only:

  • Marquee Lot, off Kumpf Boulevard: closest to Carver Arena, the Toyota Box Office and the Lexus Club. It fills quickly.
  • Fulton Lot, at Fulton and Monroe streets: best for the theater and exhibit halls, and the overflow for arena events.

Street parking and downtown parking decks are nearby. Construction on the complex's east-side glass arcade began on March 2, 2026; as of September 28, 2026, entrances 2 and 5 are open for every event and other doors vary, so allow extra time. Use Entrance 1 to buy tickets at the Toyota Box Office. Check the venue's know-before-you-go page for current details.

Bag policy and entry rules

As of 2026, each guest may bring one approved bag: a clear bag up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, used on its own, or a clutch up to 5 by 8 inches. Diaper bags with a young child and medical bags are allowed after inspection. Backpacks, duffels and larger purses are prohibited, and prohibited items cannot be stored, so they go back to the car.

  • Re-entry: arena and theater events have a no re-entry policy, including for smoking.
  • Smoking: not allowed inside, with no designated smoking area.
  • Payments: concessions and parking are card only.
  • Tickets: children 2 and older generally need a ticket.
  • Doors: arena and theater doors usually open an hour before showtime.

Check the venue's current policy before you go, since some convention center events use different rules.

Capacity, renovations and history

Carver Arena seats 11,433 for basketball, 12,036 for concerts and 9,919 for hockey and indoor football. The complex was designed by Philip Johnson and John Burgee; ground was broken on April 30, 1979, and the civic center opened in 1982. Bradley has played there since that first season. A 55 million dollar expansion from 2005 to 2007 enlarged the lobby and meeting space. In 2024 a 45 million dollar city and state renovation closed the arena for about five months and added a new center-hung video board weighing about 26,000 pounds, new ribbon boards, redone concessions and restrooms and two new artist dressing rooms; a new ice plant for the rink was scheduled for installation in 2026. The arena also hosted the IHSA boys basketball state finals from 1996 to 2019.
