Upcoming Metallica dates
Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
Midfield stage, sideline seats: the Metallica answer
At a Metallica stadium show on the M72 World Tour, buy a lower-level seat on a sideline. The band puts its stage in the middle of the field for headlining stadium dates, so the sidelines are the closest reserved seats to the action and high enough to look over the floor crowd and into the stage. If you want to be inside the show instead of watching it, the Snake Pit is the ticket, but it is standing only.
The other current format is a residency at Sphere in the Las Vegas Valley, where the in-the-round rule does not apply. The two shows call for different seats, so the first step is knowing which one you are buying.
How a center stage rewrites the stadium map
The band's tour help pages say the stage stands in the center of the field on headlining stadium shows, with festivals, non-headlining dates, benefits and the Sphere residency excluded, and that fans can see the band from any point in the stadium. An in-the-round stage (one with the audience on every side) erases the usual dead zone behind an end stage. There is no back of the stage to sit behind.
What replaces the old problem is distance. With the stage near the 50-yard line, a lower sideline seat is far closer than an end-zone seat at the same height. The Snake Pit, a standing fan area enclosed by the stage itself, is the closest spot of all; the band's pages state that every Snake Pit ticket is a standing ticket.
Snake Pit to upper end zone, ranked
Open the seating map on each event, but these rules hold for the round layout:
- Lower sidelines: the best reserved seats. Close to a midfield stage, with enough elevation to see the whole platform and the players moving around it.
- Snake Pit: inside the stage and part of the spectacle. It is a crowd experience, not a fixed view: you stand all night, and band members pass in front of you rather than holding one spot.
- Floor around the stage: usually general admission (standing, no assigned spots). Loud and close, but flat, so your view depends on your height and how near the rail you get.
- Lower end zones: a straight look across the floor at the stage, farther than the sidelines. A reasonable middle option.
- Upper sidelines: the value pick, with the whole round stage and its production in clear view.
- Upper end-zone corners: the most distant seats in the building.
One warning: in stadiums with a deep overhang above the lower bowl, the last lower-level rows can lose the top of the video screens. Front rows of the upper level can be the better seat.
Picking a seat inside Sphere
Sphere seats about 17,600 under a wraparound LED screen, and much of the visual show plays across the dome above and around you. Metallica's help pages confirm the round stage is not used there. As a general guide, seats in the middle of the second level take in both the band and the full screen; the rear rows of the lowest level sit under an overhang that cuts off the top of the image; and the upper levels see the whole screen but are far from the stage.
As of October 2026, the Sphere residency dates were marked sold out on the band's tour page, so resale is the main way in. The band also lists a Sphere bag policy: large bags and backpacks are not permitted, and small clutches or fanny packs are limited to roughly 6 by 6 by 2 inches. Check the current policy before you go.
No Repeat Weekends and one-night stops
Many M72 cities got two shows, two nights apart, under the No Repeat Weekend format: entirely different set lists each night, so a fan at both hears two distinct concerts. The Sphere residency uses the same paired-show idea.
The 2027 North American leg changes that. According to the band's help pages, every stop on that leg is a one-night-only show, so there is no second night to fall back on in those cities.
Three tours that set the scale
Figures below come from the tour records cited on this page. Upcoming dates are in the live event list.
- WorldWired Tour, February 2016 to August 2019: 159 shows across the Americas, Europe and Asia, with reported attendance of 4.1 million from 139 of them.
- M72 World Tour, from April 27, 2023: launched in Amsterdam behind 72 Seasons and played mostly stadiums across Europe, North America, Mexico and Oceania. Pollstar named it Rock Tour of the Year in 2024 and again in 2026. The August 2023 shows in Arlington, Texas, were filmed for cinemas, and at Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium on May 7, 2025, the crowd's movement during "Enter Sandman" registered on the university's seismological observatory. As listed in fall 2026, the final leg is 12 North American stadium dates in May and June 2027, finishing in Salt Lake City.
- Life Burns Faster at Sphere, October 2026 to March 2027: announced in February 2026 with eight shows and expanded twice within weeks to 24 because of demand.
Fifth Member presales and package tiers
- The fan club buys first. Members of the Fifth Member club get a presale before the public on-sale, and the band publishes ticket limits per city. A lot of the Snake Pit and lower-sideline inventory moves in that window.
- Two-night tickets can come first. When M72 first went on sale in December 2022, two-day tickets were sold before single-show tickets, so committed fans bought early and single nights got tighter.
- One-night cities concentrate demand. With the 2027 North American stops all single shows, each market's buyers converge on one date.
- Packages sit apart. Enhanced experience and hotel packages are sold separately from standard tickets.
Resale prices can sit above or below face value and tend to move as the show approaches. Every Reserved Seat order carries a 100% guarantee. The full rules are on the band's ticketing help pages.
Hetfield, Ulrich and four decades of thrash
James Hetfield (vocals and rhythm guitar) and Lars Ulrich (drums) formed Metallica in Los Angeles in 1981. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo complete the current lineup. The early run of Kill 'Em All (1983), Ride the Lightning (1984) and Master of Puppets (1986) built the thrash metal canon; the 1991 self-titled record, known as the Black Album, is certified 16 times platinum in the US. More recent albums include Hardwired... to Self-Destruct (2016) and 72 Seasons (2023).
The band reports more than 163 million albums sold, has 10 Grammy Awards and joined the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009. A December 2013 show in Antarctica made it the first band to play all seven continents.
Frequently asked questions
Are sideline or end-zone seats better for Metallica?
Sideline seats. The stage sits at midfield on headlining stadium dates, so lower sideline sections are closest, and upper sideline seats are the value choice.
Can you sit in the Metallica Snake Pit?
No. The Snake Pit is a standing-only area inside the stage, and the band states that all Snake Pit tickets are standing tickets.
Does the Sphere residency use the in-the-round stage?
No. The band's help pages exclude the Life Burns Faster residency at Sphere from the center-stage setup used at headlining stadium shows.
Will the 2027 North American dates have two nights per city?
No. The band says every 2027 North American stop is a one-night-only show rather than a No Repeat Weekend.
How do I get into the Metallica fan club presale?
Join the band's Fifth Member fan club, whose members receive a presale ahead of the general on-sale, subject to per-city ticket limits.
