Georgia football Saturdays · club shows most other nights

On fall Saturdays the seat question is about a 93,000-seat stadium; the rest of the year it is about how early you reach a downtown club floor.

Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.

The short version for Athens ticket buyers

Your Athens ticket is almost always one of two things: a reserved seat at Sanford Stadium for a University of Georgia football game, or a general-admission spot (no assigned seat) at a downtown club. Football seats are where location and price vary most, so that is where the seat decision deserves the most thought. For club shows, the choice is mostly about timing, because the best place to stand goes to whoever arrives first.

The town itself has about 127,000 residents (2020 census), yet its music history reads like a much bigger city's. R.E.M., the B-52's, Widespread Panic, Pylon and the Drive-By Truckers all came up here, and several of the rooms where they started still book shows.

  • Football Saturdays: Georgia Bulldogs Football at Sanford Stadium, listed at 93,033 seats as of 2024.
  • Indoor sports: Stegeman Coliseum for UGA basketball, gymnastics and volleyball.
  • Arena tours and minor league hockey: Akins Ford Arena at the Classic Center.
  • Clubs and theaters: the Georgia Theatre, the 40 Watt Club, the Morton Theatre and the Classic Center Theatre.

Picking a seat at Sanford Stadium

Sanford Stadium sits in a natural valley between UGA's North and Science campuses and dates to October 12, 1929. Privet hedges have ringed the playing surface since that first season, which is where the phrase "between the hedges" comes from; the hedges in place today went in during 2024. The field has carried the name Dooley Field since 2019, honoring longtime coach Vince Dooley, and the crowd record of 93,246 came against Notre Dame that same year.

  • Lower sideline: the closest, clearest view of the whole field, and the seats that usually command the most on resale.
  • Upper sideline: a full view of plays developing, often a better football view than the low rows of the end zones.
  • End zones: good for watching scoring drives come toward you, weaker for judging plays at the far end.
  • Early-season heat: September day games are hot and humid, and the bowl traps warmth, so bring water and sun protection whichever section you pick.

Season-ticket holders and donor priority account for a large share of the stadium, which is why most visitors buy on the resale market. The biggest SEC opponents create the steepest demand. The stadium has also started booking concerts: Jason Aldean and Luke Bryan shared a bill there in April 2026 before a crowd of more than 60,000.

Club floors and theater seats downtown

Georgia Theatre

Holding roughly 1,000, the Georgia Theatre at 215 North Lumpkin Street started life as an 1889 YMCA building. The B-52's played the first concert there in 1978. A fire gutted it in June 2009, and it came back in August 2011 with a rooftop bar added. Touring rock, country, jam and hip-hop acts share the calendar with local bills.

40 Watt Club

Opened on Halloween 1978, the 40 Watt Club is the room most tied to the Athens indie-rock years. It is standing room only, so the only way to choose your spot is to get there before the crowd does.

Morton Theatre

Built in 1910 in the Hot Corner, the historic center of Black-owned business in Athens, the Morton books concerts, comedy, dance and plays in a seated house.

Classic Center Theatre

With 2,122 seats, this is the room for touring Broadway productions and the home stage of the Athens Symphony Orchestra. Center orchestra and the front of the balcony are the safe choices for a full view of a staged show.

Arena layouts: Akins Ford and Stegeman

Akins Ford Arena

Before late 2024, arena tours bypassed Athens for Atlanta. The new arena at 300 North Thomas Street, behind the Classic Center, changed that. It has about 5,500 permanent seats, and sources disagree on concert capacity: the Classic Center cites about 7,500, while local guides list 8,000 to 8,500 when the floor is sold as standing room. That difference matters to you. Some concerts sell a standing floor and others are fully seated, so read the listing before choosing between a floor ticket and a raised seat. The arena is also home ice for the Athens Rock Lobsters of the Federal Prospects Hockey League.

Stegeman Coliseum

Stegeman opened in 1964 and seats 10,523 for Georgia basketball, gymnastics and volleyball. For basketball, a seat along the sideline gives a better look at both ends of the floor than one behind a basket.

Athens across the year

  • September to November: home football weekends shape everything, from hotel rates to dinner reservations to parking.
  • November to March: basketball, gymnastics and volleyball at Stegeman Coliseum, and Rock Lobsters hockey at Akins Ford Arena.
  • April: UGA baseball and the Twilight criterium, a downtown bike race held April 17–18 in 2026.
  • Late June: AthFest, a free three-day festival of outdoor stages and a club crawl, which ran June 26–28 in 2026.
  • October extras: Historic Athens Porchfest in the middle of the month and the Wild Rumpus Halloween parade near the end.

Club shows happen all year. With most students away in summer, downtown quiets down, and that is often the easiest season to land a ticket to a small-room show that sold out quickly.

Getting in from Atlanta and moving around Athens

Plan to fly into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, about 70 miles southwest, and drive or ride a shuttle from there; Athens-Ben Epps Airport has no scheduled airline service. On football Saturdays the roads into town back up for hours before and after the game, so most visitors arrive early in the day.

Once you are in town, leave the car. Sanford Stadium, the Georgia Theatre, the 40 Watt Club, the Morton Theatre and Akins Ford Arena all sit within about a mile of each other along the edge of North Campus. Athens Transit buses are fare-free every day of the week, a real help on game days when campus parking is scarce and restricted. Stegeman Coliseum is the outlier, on the south side of campus, so take the bus or allow a longer walk.

  • Downtown grid: College Avenue, Clayton, Washington and Lumpkin streets hold the clubs, the Morton and most of the restaurants and bars; a downtown hotel is within walking distance of the stadium.
  • East side of downtown: Akins Ford Arena and the Classic Center Theatre are steps from the downtown hotels.
  • South campus: few restaurants sit near Stegeman, so eat downtown first.
  • Between shows: Wuxtry Records on East Clayton Street, open since 1975, once employed R.E.M.'s Peter Buck.

Before you buy Athens tickets

  • Lock in lodging for game weekends first. The local hotel supply is small next to a stadium of this size, so many fans stay in Atlanta or nearby towns.
  • Read club listings for timing, not location. At general-admission rooms, listings differ mainly by date and demand, not by where you will stand.
  • Expect a clear-bag rule. UGA has followed the SEC clear-bag policy (transparent bags within size limits) at Sanford Stadium and its other ticketed venues since 2017. Confirm the current gameday rules at georgiadogs.com before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Where should you sit for a Georgia football game?

Lower sideline seats give the closest full view, and upper sideline seats often see plays develop better than low end zone rows. Early-season day games are hot, so plan for sun wherever you sit.

Are Akins Ford Arena concerts seated or standing?

It depends on the show. The arena has about 5,500 permanent seats, and some concerts add a standing floor while others are fully seated, so check the listing before you buy.

Do you need to arrive early for the 40 Watt Club?

Yes, if you care where you stand. The 40 Watt Club is general admission with no assigned seats, so early arrivals get the spots nearest the stage.

What was the Sanford Stadium attendance record?

The record is 93,246, set against Notre Dame in 2019. The stadium was listed at 93,033 seats as of 2024.

Which airport do visitors to Athens use?

Most fly into Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, about 70 miles away, because Athens-Ben Epps Airport has no scheduled airline service.

Is there pro hockey in Athens?

Yes, at the minor league level. The Athens Rock Lobsters of the Federal Prospects Hockey League play at Akins Ford Arena. The city has no major-league team.
