The Sanford Stadium seat call, fast
The short version for a Georgia Bulldogs home game: reserve a sideline seat between the 30-yard lines, pick the south stands for an afternoon kickoff, and choose a high sideline row over a low end-zone row if you have to trade. That combination gets you a full view of the field with the sun behind you rather than in your eyes.
Georgia plays at Sanford Stadium on the University of Georgia campus in Athens, with a listed capacity of 93,033 as of 2024. The home slate generally opens in early September and ends in late November. One major rivalry, Florida, is never a home game; more on that below.
An east-west field and the sun
Most college stadiums point the field north to south. Sanford's runs east to west, and that orientation decides comfort at a day game more than any other factor.
- South stands: in general, the afternoon sun sits behind you. This is the side to want for a September kickoff in daylight.
- North stands: these face south, toward the sun. The view of the field is just as good; the glare and heat are worse in the afternoon. The north side also holds the 27 SkySuites added in 2004.
- East end zone: fans here look west, straight into a setting sun late in an afternoon game.
- Night games: the sun question disappears, and any sideline seat between the 30s is the best seat in the house.
This sun guidance comes from the field's orientation, not from a published shade map, so treat it as a general rule.
High rows, low rows and premium spaces
In a bowl this large, height and angle matter as much as distance. A seat high on the sideline shows formations, coverages and the hedges framing the field. A seat in the first rows behind an end zone looks close on the seating chart, but play at the far end collapses into a flat line. If both cost about the same, take the high sideline.
- Sideline lower level: the premium experience and the highest resale prices.
- Sideline upper level: distant but complete; often the best value for a big game.
- End zones: the most affordable way in, best in middle and upper rows.
- Suites and clubs: roughly 50 luxury suites, the north-side SkySuites and the 50 Yard Line Club, created in 2024. These are sold by the athletics department and rarely appear on the open market.
Students and the visiting school each get a dedicated block, placed by the athletics department on its current seating map. For a rivalry game, avoid listings in or beside the visitors' area if you want to sit with Georgia fans. In the southwest corner, a mausoleum holds the past Uga mascots, and many fans stop there before kickoff.
Opponents that move the Athens market
- Auburn: the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry, first played in 1892. The host alternates, so Athens gets it about every other year.
- Georgia Tech: known as Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate, first played in 1893. It traditionally ends the regular season and alternates between Athens and Atlanta.
- Tennessee and South Carolina: former SEC East division foes that still draw heavily when they visit.
- Top-10 visitors and marquee nonconference opponents: the stadium record of 93,246 came for Notre Dame on September 21, 2019, a good sign of what a national-brand opponent does to demand.
Night kickoffs push demand up as well. The quietest weeks are early-season games against smaller programs, which are usually the easiest and least expensive Sanford tickets of the year.
Florida week and Atlanta postseason trips
The Florida game has been played in Jacksonville since 1933, with two exceptions, and tickets are split between the schools. The game, once nicknamed the "World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party" and now played for an oar-shaped trophy, moves while Jacksonville's stadium is renovated: Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta in 2026, Raymond James Stadium in Tampa in 2027, and back to Jacksonville in 2028. Resale is how most fans of either school get in.
A good Georgia season usually finishes in Atlanta too. Mercedes-Benz Stadium hosts the SEC Championship Game (under contract through 2027) and the Peach Bowl. Bulldogs fans travel in large numbers, so seats for those games move fast once the matchup is known. For College Football Playoff games farther from the Southeast, travel costs thin out the crowd and more seats tend to appear on resale.
Buying when season accounts hold the stadium
Season-ticket accounts own most of Sanford Stadium, and the right to those seats is ranked by donations to the athletics department's booster program. Students have their own pool. What is left for a public single-game sale is small, and for the biggest games there may be nothing at all.
That makes resale the normal route for high-demand games. Listings come from season holders who cannot attend, and prices react to the opponent, kickoff time, rankings and forecast. When both teams keep winning, rivalry and top-10 games tend to climb toward kickoff; early nonconference games often ease in the last few days. Every Reserved Seat order comes with a 100% guarantee.

Your gameday in Athens
- The Dawg Walk: players pass through a corridor of fans near the Tate Student Center on the way to the stadium. Get there early for a spot on the route.
- The Chapel Bell: after a win, fans and students ring the University Chapel bell on North Campus, a custom from the 1890s. After a big win the line can stretch for hours.
- Uga on the sideline: the white English bulldog mascot works every home game. The current dog, Boom, became Uga XI in April 2023.
- The hedges: pulled out in 1996 so the field could host Olympic soccer, replanted from nursery stock, and renewed again in 2024.
Tailgates fill North Campus and nearby lots, and rules on tents, alcohol and parking change by season. As of recent seasons, SEC stadiums limit bag size and type at the gates; read the athletics department's current bag, parking and mobile-ticket rules before you leave.
Background: from 1892 to four titles
Georgia first fielded a team in 1892 and joined the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in 1933. The program claims national championships for 1942, 1980, 2021 and 2022 and counts 16 SEC titles, behind only Alabama. Halfback Frank Sinkwich (1942) and running back Herschel Walker (1982) won the Heisman Trophy.
Sanford Stadium opened on October 12, 1929, with 30,000 seats and has grown through a long run of expansions, the latest in 2018 and 2022. The surface is natural Bermuda grass. English privet has lined the field since that first game, which is why a home game is called "Between the Hedges." The silver pants, or "Silver Britches," date to 1939, and the Uga line of live mascots to 1956.
Frequently asked questions
Which side of Sanford Stadium should I pick for a day game?
The south stands. Because the field runs east to west, the south side generally has the afternoon sun behind it, while the north side faces into it.
Is a high sideline seat better than a low end-zone seat?
Usually. The high sideline shows the whole field and how plays develop; low end-zone rows look close but flatten play at the far end.
Where do Georgia and Florida play?
At a neutral site, traditionally Jacksonville. The game is scheduled for Atlanta in 2026 and Tampa in 2027, then returns to Jacksonville in 2028.
Can I buy suite or club seats at Sanford Stadium?
The suites, SkySuites and the 50 Yard Line Club are sold by the athletics department and rarely reach resale.
What is the Sanford Stadium attendance record?
93,246, set for Notre Dame on September 21, 2019. The listed capacity is 93,033 as of 2024.
Why are big Georgia games mostly resale?
Season accounts ranked by booster giving, plus the student allotment, absorb most seats, leaving little or nothing for a public single-game sale.
