The illusions are the reason to go, so the seat matters. A practical guide to sitting well for Cursed Child in New York and on tour.

Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.

Sitting close enough for the magic

The best seats for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child are in the middle rows of the center orchestra at the Lyric Theatre on 43rd Street, the play's Broadway home since April 2018 and still its home as of October 2026. From there many of the illusions happen within arm's reach, and you can read the actors' faces. The front of the center dress circle (the lower balcony) is the close runner-up, and some repeat visitors prefer it, because the slight height shows the full stage, the ensemble movement and the Tony-winning lighting.

The Lyric is one of Broadway's biggest houses, so the real risk is distance. The higher and farther to the side you go, the more the close-up tricks lose their snap.

Lyric Theatre levels and what each one gives you

The house was rebuilt for this play in 2017 and 2018, losing 199 seats in the process. What remains is 1,622 seats that are roomier, with more space between rows, than you get in most of the neighboring houses. There are three levels.

Orchestra (ground floor)

The middle of the center section is the sweet spot. The first few rows sit below stage level and can strain your neck. Seats at the far edges of the orchestra lose part of the opposite side of the stage.

Dress circle (lower balcony)

The first rows of the center dress circle are a strong, often underrated pick for a show built on stagecraft. You trade a little intimacy for the whole picture.

Balcony (upper level)

This is the most distant level. It suits a fan whose priority is simply getting inside, but actors look small and some illusions read as distant effects. If you buy here, stay central and as far forward as you can.

What the play is about

Don't expect songs: Cursed Child is a straight play. The story jumps ahead nearly two decades from the end of the seventh book and follows Albus Severus, Harry's younger son, and his improbable best friend, Draco's son Scorpius Malfoy. The boys get hold of a Time-Turner (a device for traveling into the past) and try to reverse a tragedy from the past, and the adults they grew up reading about, Harry, Hermione, Ron, Ginny and Draco, have to clean up after them. Fans who know the books catch more references, though newcomers are not lost.

The script is Jack Thorne's, working from a story he developed with J.K. Rowling and the director, John Tiffany. London saw it first, at the Palace Theatre, in the summer of 2016. The 2017 Olivier Awards gave it nine prizes; the 2018 Tonys gave it six, Best Play and Tiffany's directing award among them. No play has been reported to gross more on Broadway.

One ticket covers the whole story now

Originally the story was split across two separate performances. Broadway changed that after the pandemic closure: since November 12, 2021, the Lyric has staged a condensed single-evening version. Guides that tell you to book Part One and Part Two are describing the old format.

Who is on stage affects how fast seats sell. The Broadway site, checked October 1, 2026, has Tom Felton (the film series' Draco) playing Draco until January 3, 2027, with Rupert Grint back as Ron starting February 2, 2027. Expect tighter availability around the first and final weeks of any film actor's stint, and look up the cast for your performance before weighing seats.

Length, age limits and sensory notes

Budget close to three hours: the production gives about 2 hours 55 minutes, intermission included. Children need to be at least 5 to enter, 8 is the suggested minimum, under-15s must come with an adult, and everyone, whatever their age, needs a ticket.

Effects are loud and strobes are used. The magic is the draw: spells, transformations and the hooded Dementors (the soul-draining jailers from the books), all with no visible machinery. The tone darkens after intermission, which can unsettle kids who found the later films scary. For families with noise-sensitive children, the theater holds KultureCity sensory-inclusive certification and lends headphones and other sensory kits. Be seated on time, since the first scenes explain how the time travel works.

Busy weeks and touring stops

  • Hardest weeks: Thanksgiving, the Christmas-to-New-Year's run, school vacations in spring and weekends all summer.
  • Casting spikes: the first and last weeks a film-series actor is in the cast.
  • Easiest: midweek shows from late January through February, and again in early autumn.

Resale pricing reacts to the calendar first and the location second, so sliding your visit a day or two can buy you a better row. Every Reserved Seat order is backed by a 100% guarantee. Showtimes are listed on the Broadway production's site.

The touring company opened in Chicago in September 2024. Checked October 1, 2026, its website shows Salt Lake City's Eccles Theater through October 11, 2026 (the stop opened September 19), and says additional cities are coming. There are also companies in London, Tokyo and the Netherlands. Road houses often outsize the Lyric, so lean toward the center and the first balcony rather than a seat far back on the floor, and pass on the top tier if you are going for the effects.

Frequently asked questions

Where should I sit to see the illusions in Cursed Child?

Middle rows in the center orchestra put many of the tricks close in front of you. The first rows of the center dress circle show the whole stage and are the best alternative.

Do I need two tickets to see Cursed Child on Broadway?

No. Broadway has used a single-performance version since November 12, 2021.

How long is the Broadway performance?

Close to three hours: roughly 2 hours 55 minutes with the intermission.

Is the balcony at the Lyric Theatre too far away?

It is the most distant level in a 1,622-seat house, so actors look small and close-up magic loses impact. Front and center balcony seats are the best of that level.

Can children attend Cursed Child?

The suggested minimum age is 8, no one under 5 is admitted, and under-15s need an adult with them. Strobes and loud effects are part of the show.
