Upcoming MJ the Musical dates
Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
Front mezzanine first, center orchestra second
At the Neil Simon Theatre, the first several rows of the center mezzanine give the most complete view. The show's strengths are full-stage dance formations, a dense lighting rig and projected scenery, and all three read best from slightly above. You give up some facial detail in the dialogue scenes, but you see the choreography the way it was designed. As of October 2026 the show is still running on West 52nd Street with no closing date announced.
Fans who came to study the lead's moves and facial acting should pick the center orchestra in roughly the middle third of the rows. That zone still takes in the full stage width, draws the strongest demand and tends to cost the most.
The Neil Simon layout in brief
The Neil Simon is a 1,467-seat Broadway house at 250 West 52nd Street, at the north end of the Theater District and a short walk from Times Square. It opened in 1927 as the Alvin Theatre and took the playwright Neil Simon's name in 1983. Herbert J. Krapp designed it with two seating levels, the orchestra and a single mezzanine, plus boxes along the side walls.
Where the dancing gets lost
- Front orchestra rows: very close, yet you look up at the stage floor and miss the feet and floor patterns that make the numbers work.
- Far sides of either level: high-side orchestra and edge mezzanine seats lose part of the stage, a bigger cost in a show built on formations.
- Boxes: they feel special, but the sightline to the stage is steep and sideways.
- Rear orchestra under the overhang: the mezzanine above can clip the top of the set and lights. A center seat in the rear mezzanine is often the better buy.
Match the seat to why you are going
The right MJ seat depends on what you want from the night.
- You love the dancing: front mezzanine, center. The formations, the floor patterns and the lighting cues land as one picture, and nothing important happens out of your sight.
- You want to feel the lead's performance: middle orchestra, center. You catch the facial acting and the footwork while still seeing both sides of the stage.
- You are on a tighter budget: rear mezzanine, center. It is farther back, but the elevation that helps the front mezzanine still works for you, and it usually beats a rear orchestra seat under the overhang.
- You are bringing someone tall or restless: an aisle seat in the orchestra gives the most room to stretch and the easiest exit at intermission.
In every case, a center seat a few rows farther back beats a closer seat far to one side. The show's big numbers use the full width of the stage, and the edges are where they get cut off.
A 1992 rehearsal room and a catalog of hits
MJ the Musical, styled MJ: The Musical, is not a cradle-to-grave biography. It takes place in 1992 during rehearsals for Michael Jackson's Dangerous World Tour, shortly before the tour was due to open in Munich, and slips back into earlier chapters of his life as the songs summon them. The music comes from Jackson's own catalog, so MJ belongs to the jukebox genre (musicals assembled from songs audiences already know).
The book (the spoken script) is by Lynn Nottage, who has won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice. Christopher Wheeldon, best known for his ballet work, directed and choreographed. The design team includes Derek McLane and Peter Nigrini on scenery and projections, Paul Tazewell on costumes, Natasha Katz on lighting and Gareth Owen on sound. The script focuses on fame and the work of mounting a stadium tour, and critics noted that it spends little time on the harder parts of Jackson's life, so expect a celebration of the music rather than an inquiry.
Previews started December 6, 2021, and opening night was February 1, 2022, with Myles Frost as Michael. At the 2022 Tony Awards the show won 4 of 10 nominations: Best Actor in a Musical for Frost, Best Choreography for Wheeldon, and the two design prizes for lighting (Natasha Katz) and sound (Gareth Owen). Three of the four went to dance, light and sound, which is exactly why seat height matters here. Reviews were mixed on the dialogue but warm on the spectacle. By March 2026 the production had played 1,701 performances to more than 2.2 million people, grossing around 319 million dollars, and it had broken the Neil Simon's house box office record 11 times. Counting every company worldwide, the show has sold more than 7 million tickets.
Tour, London and international companies
- North America: a tour opened August 1, 2023 at Chicago's Nederlander Theatre and was booked to finish in August 2025, and the touring roster the Broadway League published in October 2026 no longer lists it.
- London: the Prince Edward Theatre production opened in March 2024 and closed February 28, 2026.
- Other markets: Hamburg from December 2024 (German dialogue, English songs), Sydney from February 2025 and then Melbourne, an Asia tour scheduled from October 2026, and a UK tour planned for 2027.
For a US buyer in late 2026, Broadway is the only domestic option.
Getting in the door and the busy calendar
The show's website was offline for maintenance during an October 2026 check, so running time and age guidance are not given here; look them up before you bring children. Leave real time for the door. Bag checks happen on a slim stretch of 52nd Street sidewalk, and the line backs up fast before an evening curtain, worst of all on Saturdays.
MJ has sold steadily since opening, so the calendar drives resale prices more than buzz does.
- Firmest demand: Thanksgiving through New Year's, spring break and summer.
- First to go: Friday and Saturday evenings.
- More choice: Tuesday through Thursday evenings and weekday matinees outside holidays.
- Easiest stretch: midweek in January and early February.
- Cast changes: a new lead in the title role can briefly lift interest.

Frequently asked questions
Is the mezzanine good for MJ the Musical?
Yes. The front mezzanine gives the fullest view of the choreography, lighting and projections. Center orchestra in the middle rows is the better choice for close-up detail.
How long has MJ the Musical been on Broadway?
Since opening night on February 1, 2022, at the Neil Simon Theatre. As of October 2026 it is still running with no closing date announced.
Does MJ the Musical cover Michael Jackson's whole life?
No. The story stays inside the 1992 rehearsals for the Dangerous World Tour and flashes back to earlier moments through his songs. Critics observed that it largely sidesteps the controversies.
Are box seats at the Neil Simon Theatre worth it for MJ?
Usually not. The boxes sit at a steep side angle, which hides part of the full-stage dance formations.
Which Tony Awards did MJ the Musical win?
It took four at the 2022 ceremony: the lead actor prize for Myles Frost, plus choreography, lighting design and sound design.
