Upcoming Moulin Rouge! The Musical dates
Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
Where to catch it after Broadway, and where to sit
As of October 2026 you cannot see Moulin Rouge! The Musical in North America. The Al Hirschfeld Theatre hosted its final Broadway performance on August 30, 2026 (the run totaled 2,297 regular performances plus 24 previews), and the touring company had already played its last show at Boston's Citizens Opera House on August 2, 2026. The production keeps going at the Piccadilly Theatre in London's West End and on an international tour, with new companies announced for Hamburg, Sydney and Japan.
Wherever you see it, the strongest seats are the middle rows of the center orchestra, for immersion, and the center of the first raised level, for the dance patterns. According to the producers, every house it plays is remade to look like the club itself, so the design spills well past the stage frame.
Inside the club versus above it
Center orchestra, middle rows
This is as close to the cabaret as you can get. You sit inside the color and the volume, near enough to watch faces during the big ballads and the can-can.
Front of the first balcony, center
Called the mezzanine in US houses and the dress circle in London, this level gives the clearest view of the choreography. The big numbers depend on dancer formations and lighting, and both read best from a slight rise.
Two kinds of seat to avoid
- Row ends at the far sides: the set is wide, and the extremes lose slices of the stage.
- The back of the top tier: the spectacle carries, but the quiet scenes between Christian and Satine shrink to almost nothing.
Paris, 1899, set to pop hits
The show adapts Baz Luhrmann's 2001 film into a jukebox musical, one built from existing pop songs. Christian, a young American songwriter in Paris in 1899, falls for Satine, the headline star of the Moulin Rouge, while the club's survival hangs on keeping a rich and jealous duke satisfied. The score keeps the film's "Your Song" and "Come What May" and adds songs released after the movie came out.
Film fans should expect a remix more than a copy: the stage plot swaps in a new show-within-a-show, makes Christian an American and softens the Duke.
Ten Tonys and a seven-year Broadway run
The creative team paired John Logan's book with Alex Timbers's direction and Sonya Tayeh's choreography, plus sets by Derek McLane and costumes by Catherine Zuber. After a 2017 workshop, the musical premiered at Boston's Emerson Colonial Theatre on July 10, 2018. Broadway previews began in June 2019 and opening night was July 25, 2019, starring Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo. The pandemic stopped it in March 2020; it came back on September 24, 2021.
The 2021 Tony Awards, covering the 2019–20 season, gave it 10 wins from 14 nominations: the top prize for Best Musical, acting awards for Tveit and for Danny Burstein (Zidler), the directing award for Timbers, and every design category, along with choreography and orchestrations. The producers say the show paid back its investment in late 2022, played to almost 3 million people on Broadway and finished 36th on the list of Broadway's longest runs. Zidler was later played by Tituss Burgess, Wayne Brady and Megan Thee Stallion; JoJo and Meg Donnelly took turns as Satine. The touring company, which began in Chicago in March 2022, visited 73 cities in the US, Canada and Mexico.

Mature themes, age checks and buying patterns
This is a show for teenagers and adults. The stage version makes Satine's arrangement with the Duke explicitly sexual, Satine is dying of consumption from the start, and near the end a drunken Christian, fueled by absinthe, threatens suicide before Satine dies in his arms. The production is loud and opulent by design. Age guidance and running time differ from company to company; look at the London or tour page before bringing anyone younger than a teen.
Availability now depends on location. London releases performances on a rolling basis, adding one week each Monday roughly five months out. Tour engagements last a few weeks each, which makes the first and last weekends the hardest to get, with weekend evenings selling ahead of weeknights. A closed Broadway title can return on tour, in a regional staging or in a new production, and the best seats for a return usually go quickly. Every Reserved Seat order is backed by a 100% guarantee.
