Upcoming Billy Joel dates
Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
Can you buy Billy Joel tickets right now?
Not for a Billy Joel concert, as of October 1, 2026. A diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus (excess fluid around the brain, which can disturb balance, sight and hearing) led him to call off all of his scheduled concerts in May 2025, and his tour page showed no new dates when checked. Speaking on SiriusXM in September 2026, he credited shunt surgery with restoring much of his balance and memory, and repeated his doctors' view that each performance had been hitting him like "something like a concussion every time I did a show." A return to touring has not been announced.
That makes the seat question hypothetical for now. It still matters, because a Billy Joel return would sell fast, and the right seat for a seated pianist is not the same as the right seat for a rock band.
Seat choices for a show built around a piano
- Arena lower bowl, angled toward the stage: the best seats. You sit above the floor and close enough to watch his hands on the keys, both live and on the screens.
- Arena floor: close but level. Beyond the opening handful of rows, heads in front of you block a seated performer, so the floor is a weaker buy than it looks on a map.
- Stadium field near the stage: the closest thing to an arena show in a stadium. The lower sideline sections next to the stage are the next pick.
- Stadium upper-deck ends: the farthest seats from the stage. Fine for the singalong, but the video boards will carry the show for you.
- Side-stage and rear-stage seats: skip these unless the listing explains the view. The keyboard is turned toward the main audience, so you would see his back.
Checking a listing before you buy
While no Billy Joel dates are announced, any ticket using his name deserves a second look. Cross-check the city, building and date against his tour page. Read the event title carefully, because tribute bands and shows built on his songs often carry his name in the listing. The ticket listings attached to this guide include only events that are really on sale.
If he does announce shows, expect the heaviest demand in the New York area, on Long Island and in Philadelphia, where the arena now called Xfinity Mobile Arena hangs a banner for the 48 times he sold it out. Every Reserved Seat order includes guaranteed entry.
The Garden years, by the numbers
Madison Square Garden is the building most tied to his live career. He first played there in 1978 and returned 149 more times through July 2024.
- 2006: a dozen sold-out Garden nights in a row, rewarded with a retired number 12 banner, the first the arena raised for a non-athlete.
- Early 2014: the start of a residency of one show a month.
- March 2024: the 100th residency show, with Jerry Seinfeld and Sting as guests.
- Summer 2024: the last residency night, the 104th of the run and his 150th Garden show, with Axl Rose joining him.
Those nights were hits concerts. "Piano Man" and "Uptown Girl" shared the set with deep cuts and the occasional cover, and the crowd sang most of the way through.
Stadiums, the Soviet Union and Face to Face
- 1987: one of the first Western rock artists to tour the Soviet Union.
- 1994 onward: joint Face to Face tours with Elton John, trading songs and singing duets; they last toured together from spring 2009 into spring 2010.
- Stadium firsts: SunTrust Park in Atlanta hosted its first concert with him in 2017, and Camden Yards in Baltimore hosted its first concert ever with him in 2019. Co-billed stadium nights with Stevie Nicks began in 2023.
- A New York record: no other act has performed at all five of the region's big rooms: Yankee Stadium, Shea, Giants Stadium, the Garden and Nassau Coliseum.
- February 22, 2025: the Billy Joel in Concert tour played what became its last show, in Uncasville, Connecticut.
Bronx-born, Long Island-raised hitmaker
Born in the Bronx in 1949 and raised in Hicksville on Long Island, Joel sits near the top of the all-time sales list for American solo acts. His breakthrough, The Stranger (1977), moved over 10 million copies behind "Just the Way You Are" and "Only the Good Die Young." The follow-up, 52nd Street (1978), topped the album chart for the first time in his career and took Album of the Year at the Grammys. Of his 33 Top 40 singles, three hit No. 1 on the Hot 100, the last being "We Didn't Start the Fire." Honors followed: the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999 and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2013. In February 2024 he put out "Turn the Lights Back On," a new single.
Frequently asked questions
Has Billy Joel announced a comeback tour?
No. When checked on October 1, 2026, his tour page showed no dates. He said in September 2026 that surgery had improved his health but did not announce a return.
Why did Billy Joel cancel his 2025 concerts?
He was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus and canceled all scheduled shows in May 2025.
Where should you sit for a Billy Joel concert?
