Yankee Stadium seats, decided by budget and sun
The most reliable New York Yankees ticket for most fans is a Main Level (200s) infield seat at Yankee Stadium, ideally around row 16 or higher, where the roof covers you from sun and rain. You see the whole field from there and pay well below Field Level rates. If the budget is tight, the Grandstand (the 400s) from about row 6 up is the covered value play. If the budget is open, the Field Level sections just past the dugouts give you most of the closeness of the Legends seats for less.
The home team sits in the first base dugout, and that side also goes into shade earlier in the day. At Yankee Stadium, comfort and a view of the Yankees bench point the same way.
- Best balance: Main Level infield, back rows.
- Best covered value: Grandstand, row 6 and up.
- Closest without Legends pricing: Field Level just beyond the dugouts.
- Most atmosphere: right field bleachers, section 203.
Legends, Field, Main, Terrace, Grandstand: the stack
Capacity is 46,537, according to Wikipedia, well under the roughly 52,325 the stadium held in 2009, because the club later put in wider seats.
Legends Suite
The first eight rows of the lower bowl around home plate, with club access, are among the most expensive seats in professional sports. They are the closest you can get to the batter's box.
Field Level (100s)
The rest of the lower bowl. The catch is the back rows: the Main Level hangs over them, so high fly balls disappear from view. Sit closer to the field if you want to follow the ball.
Main Level (200s)
The best all-around tier. It is high enough to read the whole field, and its upper rows sit under the roof.
Terrace Level (300s)
Lower priced than the 200s and among the most sun-exposed areas in the building. Fine for a night game; harder on a July afternoon.
Grandstand (400s)
The highest and usually least expensive tier. Rows from about 6 up sit under the cantilevered roof. NYC Sports Wire and TickPick both list sections 407A and 433 as alcohol-free.
Sitting with the Bleacher Creatures
The bleachers stretch from sections 201 to 204 in right field around to 235 to 239 in left. Section 203 belongs to the Bleacher Creatures, the regulars who open each home game with the roll call: in the top of the first inning, they chant the name of each Yankees starter in the field one by one. Newcomers are expected to join in, not just watch.
Buy bleacher seats for noise, tradition and a lower outlay. Skip them if you want shade, a view of the strike zone or a quiet afternoon. There is no cover out there, and the right field side faces west into the late-day sun. The club replaced obstructed bleacher sections with open terraces in 2016 and 2017.
Where the roof shades you in the Bronx
Yankee Stadium has no roof over the field, only a cantilevered roof over the top rows. Rate Your Seats maps the result:
- Covered: Main Level infield from about row 16 up, and the Grandstand from about row 6 up.
- Shaded early: the first base side, which reaches shade sooner than third.
- Late sun: right field, which faces west.
- Most exposed: the Terrace Level and the bleachers.
For a 1 p.m. start, the covered seats generally stay shaded until about the sixth inning. For a night game, the sun only affects the opening innings, but an April evening in a shaded upper row can turn cold, so pack a layer.
Red Sox weekends and other high-demand dates
The MLB season shape is fixed: spring training in February and March, 162 games (81 in the Bronx) from late March or early April through late September, the All-Star break in mid-July, and a 12-team postseason. The balanced schedule adopted in 2023 means the Yankees face each AL East rival 13 times and every other club at least once.
On the resale market, the opponent and the day of the week move prices more than anything else.
- Boston Red Sox, the sport's most famous rivalry. Red Sox fans travel well to the Bronx, and these series are the top regular-season draw.
- New York Mets in the Subway Series, with both fan bases in the building.
- Opening Day and summer weekends, which sell far ahead.
- October. The stadium hosted World Series games in 2009, when the Yankees beat Philadelphia, and in 2024, when they lost to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The widest selection is usually on April and September weeknights against non-rivals.
4 train, Metro-North and the bag limits
Yankee Stadium is at 1 East 161st Street, and gameday traffic around it is heavy enough that transit usually wins. The 161st Street–Yankee Stadium subway station is served by the 4 train at all hours, plus the D and the weekday B. Metro-North's Yankees–East 153rd Street station, opened in 2009, sits on the Hudson Line and runs gameday trains to and from Grand Central; Harlem and New Haven line riders have fewer direct options.
As of the 2026 season, the Yankees ballpark policies allow:
- Bags: one soft-sided bag up to 16 by 16 by 8 inches, plus one smaller soft personal item. Hard-sided bags are refused, and there is no bag check.
- Water: a sealed plastic bottle up to 1 liter, or an empty reusable bottle up to 24 ounces.
- Re-entry: none.
- Left at home: cans, glass, large umbrellas and selfie sticks.

Ruth to Jeter, and the stadium across the street
The franchise started as the Baltimore Orioles of 1901 and 1902, moved to New York in 1903 as the Highlanders and became officially the Yankees in 1913. Home moved from Hilltop Park to the Polo Grounds, then to the original Yankee Stadium in 1923, with a two-season stay at Shea Stadium in 1974 and 1975 during renovation.
The numbers are unmatched: 27 World Series titles, the latest in 2009, plus 41 AL pennants and 21 AL East titles, all MLB records. The Hall of Fame line runs through Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra, Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera, among many others. The 1998 team went 114–48, then an American League record, and the club won four titles in five years from 1996 to 2000, finishing that run against the Mets.
The current stadium opened on April 16, 2009, across 161st Street from the original, and won a title in its first season. It copies the old frieze along the roofline, has a Great Hall concourse inside the main gates, and moved Monument Park, the team's plaques and retired numbers, to center field. New York City FC plays there on an interim basis, and the Pinstripe Bowl has been held there since 2010.
