Safe grandstand pick: seats 5–12 · skip right-field box angles

A 1912 ballpark rewards buyers who check the seat number, not just the section. Learn where the poles stand and which rows face the plate.

Buy the Seat Number, Not Just the Section

At Fenway Park, two tickets in the same section can deliver very different games. The safest buys are the Loge and Field Box seats between the dugouts, the Pavilion Box seats on the upper sides, and infield grandstand seats in roughly seats 5 through 12 of a row, away from the steel columns. The two traps are grandstand seats beside a support pole and the Right Field Box seats that face center field instead of home plate. Check the exact seat before you pay.

Those quirks exist because Fenway was squeezed onto a city block in 1912. It opened on April 20 of that year and is the oldest active ballpark in Major League Baseball, now addressed at 4 Jersey Street near Kenmore Square. It holds 37,305 for day games and 37,755 at night. The gap comes from a block of center-field seats that is tarped during day games to give hitters a dark backdrop, called the batter's eye.

How the Field Shapes Every View

Fenway's outfield is lopsided, and that drives the seating. Down the left-field line it is only 310 feet to the wall, which is why the Green Monster stands just over 37 feet tall. Straightaway center bends out to 420 feet at a corner called the Triangle. The right-field foul pole, Pesky's Pole, sits 302 feet from the plate, the shortest outfield distance in the majors.

The seating areas follow that irregular outline:

  • Dugout, Field and Loge Boxes. The lower infield seats. Field and Loge Boxes each run about 12 rows, with padded seats.
  • Grandstand. Rises behind the boxes under the upper deck. These are narrow wooden seats, about 15 inches across, in the original style.
  • Right Field Box. Extends the lower level down the right-field line.
  • Upper level. Pavilion Box seats along both sides, the Dell Technologies Club behind home plate, the Lansdowne Pavilion and the Right Field Roof Box.
  • Green Monster seats. Barstool seating along a rail atop the left-field wall, built before the 2003 season.
  • Bleachers. Center and right field, roughly 50 rows deep.
  • Standing room. Sold in several marked areas around the park.

The Two Big Traps

Columns in the grandstand

Steel posts that hold up the upper deck run through the grandstand. They most often land beside the first or last seat in a row and in rows 2 through 4 of many sections. If a listing says obstructed view, take it literally. Seats in the middle of a row, roughly 5 through 12, are the lower-risk choice, and a seat-view tool is worth a minute before checkout.

Right-field seats aimed at center

The Right Field Box sections and parts of the right-field grandstand point toward center field. You turn your head on every pitch, and by the seventh inning your neck will notice. The angle is sharpest near Pesky's Pole, around sections 5 and 93. These seats often look like a deal on the map. For a full nine innings, they rarely are.

Where to Spend, Where to Save

  • Spend on: Loge and Field Boxes between the dugouts. They are the best lower seats and carry the heaviest resale demand.
  • Smart middle ground: Pavilion Box. The high side view takes in the whole field, legroom beats the grandstand, and rows C and higher are covered.
  • Classic for less: infield grandstand, chosen away from the posts.
  • Save on: the bleachers, which are usually cheaper and lively. The trade-off is distance, since the upper rows sit among the farthest from home plate in baseball, and there is no shade.

Are the Monster seats worth it?

As an experience, often yes. You sit above the left fielder with the whole park spread out in front of you, and demand reflects that. As a way to watch the game, they have a blind spot: balls hit off the base of the wall directly below are hard to see.

Weather

The grandstand is mostly shielded from sun and rain by the deck overhead. The bleachers and the Monster seats are open to everything, so bring a hat and sunscreen for an afternoon game.

One seat to find

A single red seat stands out in the bleachers: Section 42, Row 37, Seat 21. It marks where a 502-foot Ted Williams home run landed on June 9, 1946.

Riding the T to Kenmore

Driving to Fenway is a poor bet; parking is scarce and neighborhood streets fill hours before the game. Take transit instead. On the MBTA Green Line, get off at Kenmore, a few minutes on foot from the park, or at Fenway station on the D branch. Commuter rail serves Lansdowne station, also close by. Game-day service changes are posted by the MBTA.

Before the game, crowds gather on Lansdowne Street behind the Green Monster and on Jersey Street outside the main gate. Afterward, Kenmore gets jammed; walking one stop down the line often gets you home sooner.

What Gets Through the Gate (2026 Season)

As of the 2026 season, Fenway allows one single-compartment bag no bigger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches, and the team encourages clear bags. Backpacks and backpack-style purses are refused unless they are diaper bags or carry medical equipment. Cans, glass and bottles are out, except one sealed plastic water bottle of 16 ounces or less, and outside alcohol is not allowed. Everyone walks through a metal detector.

Policies can shift by season or event, so look at the Red Sox security page before you leave. Reserved Seat orders come with guaranteed entry.

Fenway Through the Decades

Fenway hosted a World Series in its first season, and the Red Sox won it. More titles followed in 1918, 2004, 2007, 2013 and 2018, and the Boston Braves borrowed the park for the 1914 World Series. Concerts arrived in 2003, and the NHL Winter Classic was played on the infield in 2010 and again in 2023.

Some traditions have barely changed. The scoreboard built into the left-field wall is still operated by hand. The Monster seats, added for 2003, made the top of the wall one of baseball's most requested tickets. The street outside the main entrance was Yawkey Way from 1977 until 2018, when it went back to Jersey Street. In its centennial year, on March 7, 2012, the ballpark was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The Red Sox season runs from spring through September, with October games in postseason years.

Frequently asked questions

Which Fenway Park seats have obstructed views?

Grandstand seats next to the steel support columns, usually the first or last seat in a row and rows 2 to 4. Middle seats, roughly 5 through 12, are the safer choice.

Why do some Fenway seats face the outfield?

The park was fitted to a 1912 city block. The Right Field Box seats and parts of the right-field grandstand point toward center field, worst near sections 5 and 93.

Are Pavilion Box seats at Fenway a good buy?

They are a strong middle option, with a high view of the whole field, more legroom than the grandstand and cover from row C up.

How big a bag can I bring into Fenway Park?

As of the 2026 season, one single-compartment bag up to 12 by 12 by 6 inches. Backpacks are not allowed except diaper and medical bags, so check the current rules before you go.

Why does Fenway's capacity change between day and night games?

A section of center-field seats is covered with a tarp during day games to create a dark batter's eye, so day capacity is 37,305 and night capacity is 37,755.

What is the closest T stop to Fenway Park?

Kenmore on the Green Line is the main stop. Fenway station on the D branch and Lansdowne on commuter rail are also within walking distance.
