Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.

Fenway Bowl seats: the short answer

Buy a lower-level seat around home plate. At the Fenway Bowl, the field runs so that the shared team sideline sits along the Green Monster (the 37-foot left-field wall), and the area behind home plate looks straight across at it. That makes the Dugout, Field and Loge Box seats near the plate the closest thing Fenway Park has to midfield. The 2026 game, the Wasabi Fenway Bowl, kicks off Saturday, December 26, 2026, at 2 p.m. Eastern on ESPN.

Every other choice is a trade-off:

  • Pavilion seats above the infield give up closeness for height, and height is what lets you read a football play.
  • Grandstand seats give up a clean sightline (some have support poles in front of them) for a roof over your head.
  • Outfield and bleacher seats give up a straight view of the field, because a ballpark built around a diamond puts them at odd angles behind the end zones.

Reading a ballpark map as a football field

Fenway Park opened in 1912 and was never meant to hold a 100-yard field. Once the Red Sox season ends, the grounds crew takes out the pitcher's mound, covers the infield with filter fabric, grades the warning track (the dirt strip along the walls) and sods everything. What results is a regulation field with almost no spare room. Players at the 2024 game noted how little space sat behind each end zone.

That same year, both teams stood on one sideline, divided at the 50-yard line, with their backs to the Green Monster and facing home plate. Players compared the substitutions to line changes in hockey. For you, it means three things:

  • The benches are on the left-field side. Seats near home plate face them head-on.
  • Each fan base clusters near its own half of that shared sideline, so your section choice also picks your neighbors.
  • The setup can change. Field placement is not fixed from year to year, so match the seating chart on your listing against that season's layout before you commit.

Box, Grandstand, Pavilion or bleachers

Dugout, Field and Loge Box

These are the low seats nearest the field. Around home plate and along the infield they give the most direct view across to the teams. This is the first choice for most buyers and the zone where demand concentrates.

Grandstand

The older wooden seats beneath the upper deck. Poles that hold up the deck block parts of the view from some rows, most often at the ends of a row. If you buy here, aim for the middle of the row and read the listing for any obstructed-view note.

Pavilion

The upper seats over the infield. A baseball fan might pass on them, but for football the elevation pays off: you see formations, coverage and the full width of the field.

Outfield and bleachers

These sit beside or behind an end zone and angle toward the old diamond rather than the gridiron. Choose them only if being in the building matters more than following the action.

Fenway seats roughly 37,000 for baseball, while bowl crowds have run from 15,000 to 27,900, so much of the park stays empty. You rarely need to settle for a poor seat.

Seating for a Boston winter afternoon

This is an outdoor game in Boston one day after Christmas. Past editions have fallen between December 17 and December 28, and with a 2 p.m. start in 2026, the second half runs into dusk, when the cold sharpens.

  • Want shelter: pick a Grandstand seat under the upper deck, toward the middle of the row, to stay drier in rain or snow while avoiding the worst pole angles.
  • Want the best view: accept the exposure of the open lower boxes near home plate and dress for it.
  • Pack for the fourth quarter: a warm hat, gloves and a waterproof shell, plus a seat cushion if the game's policy allows one.

Who plays and how the matchup forms

ESPN Events and Fenway Sports Management operate the bowl, and Wasabi Technologies has held the naming rights since 2021. Its conference partners are the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the American Athletic Conference (the American). Recent pairings show the pattern: Boston College against SMU in 2023, UConn against North Carolina in 2024 and Army against UConn in 2025.

Teams are named in early December, after conference standings and other bowl commitments settle. Before that point you are buying the event, not the matchup. The single biggest factor in demand is whether a New England school is involved, because those fans can drive in for the day.

Getting in: Green Line, commuter rail and bag limits

Parking near the ballpark is scarce, so plan on transit. The MBTA Green Line serves Kenmore station (B, C and D branches) and Fenway station (D branch), each a short walk away. Lansdowne station, on the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line, sits right next to the park. December 26 may run on a holiday schedule, so check MBTA service in advance.

For baseball, the Red Sox permit single-compartment bags no larger than 12 by 12 by 6 inches, ban backpacks and screen fans with metal detectors. The bowl can set different rules, so confirm the current policy on the Red Sox ballpark page and in the bowl's game-week announcements.

Four editions and a delayed debut

The game was announced in September 2019 for the 2020–21 season, then postponed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Its rescheduled date, December 29, 2021, fell through three days out when Virginia's team had COVID-19 issues. The first kickoff finally came on December 17, 2022.

  • 2022: Louisville beat Cincinnati 24–7; attendance 15,000.
  • 2023: Boston College beat SMU 23–14; attendance 16,238.
  • 2024: UConn beat North Carolina 27–14; attendance 27,900, still the record.
  • 2025: Army beat UConn 41–16; attendance 22,461.

Football at Fenway predates the bowl. The NFL's Boston Redskins and the AFL's Boston Patriots both called it home, and Boston College played Notre Dame there in 2015. Reserved Seat backs every order with a 100% guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

Which Fenway Bowl seats face the team benches?

At the 2024 game both teams shared a sideline in front of the Green Monster, so the lower seats around home plate and along the infield looked straight at them.

Is any part of Fenway Park covered?

Grandstand seats sit beneath the upper deck, which keeps off rain and snow. Some of those seats have support poles in the sightline, mostly near the ends of rows.

What date is the 2026 Fenway Bowl?

Saturday, December 26, 2026, with a 2 p.m. Eastern kickoff on ESPN.

When are the Fenway Bowl teams announced?

Early December. The bowl draws from the ACC and the American Athletic Conference, and final pairings depend on standings and other bowl commitments.

Does the Fenway Bowl usually sell out the ballpark?

Not so far. Crowds have ranged from 15,000 in 2022 to 27,900 in 2024, against a baseball capacity of roughly 37,000.

Was the Fenway Bowl ever canceled?

Yes. The 2020 edition was postponed by the pandemic, and the December 29, 2021 game was called off three days before kickoff. The first game was played in December 2022.
