Upcoming AfroFuture dates
Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
GA or VIP at AfroFuture: The Quick Call
For most buyers, general admission (GA) is the right AfroFuture ticket. It admits you to the festival at El Wak Stadium, in the Ghanaian capital of Accra, for whichever day or weekend you buy. VIP makes sense if you value shorter lines, a calmer viewing spot and your own facilities over a long night. It takes place over two days near the end of December. The latest Accra edition, on the 28th and 29th of December 2025, had Asake headlining under the theme African Nostalgia.
As of October 2026, the official site had not posted a December 2026 Accra edition. The late-December slot has been steady, but confirm the dates before you book flights.
What Each Tier Gets You
AfroFuture keeps its tiers simpler than the big U.S. festivals. Recent editions have offered two:
- GA: admission to the grounds, including the open area in front of the stage. You stand where you can get to, so arriving earlier is how you get closer to the front for the headliner.
- VIP: the 2025 Detroit edition described it as faster entry lanes, a better viewing zone, restrooms reserved for VIP holders, and a bar and food area of its own.
The trade-off is mostly about comfort across a long evening. With music from mid-afternoon until a late headliner set, separate restrooms and a less crowded bar matter more at hour seven than at hour one. Perks change by edition, so read the current descriptions before you choose. Accra tickets have been sold on Tix.Africa, a ticketing platform based in Ghana, according to the festival's site.
When AfroFuture Tickets Get Scarce
Demand rises as holiday flights fill. The festival is designed to bring together Africans living on the continent and those in the diaspora, many of whom fly to Ghana for the holidays. Interest builds early and jumps once the headliner is named; that announcement moves resale activity more than anything else.
Accra's December calendar is crowded, with other large events such as Afro Nation chasing the same audience. VIP inventory is smaller, so it usually tightens before GA does. If you already know you want VIP, there is little reason to wait for the lineup.
Afrochella, the Coachella Suit and a New Name
Abdul Karim Abdullah co-founded the festival in 2019 through Culture Management Group (CMG). It launched as Afrochella, a name that nodded to California's Coachella. That resemblance led the Coachella organizers to file a trademark infringement suit in October 2022. Its last outing as Afrochella, themed around Afrofuturism, filled El Wak Stadium over the final weekend of December 2022; every edition since has used the AfroFuture name.
The rest of the formula stayed: same stadium, same late-December dates and the same blend of West African headliners, diaspora DJs and fashion, food, art and design markets. Search results and resale listings still use both names for the same event.
One year broke the pattern. In December 2024 the usual weekend went to Culture Beach Jam, a smaller CMG event at Accra Polo Beach sized for as many as 8,000 people. The stadium festival came back in December 2025.
Who Has Played the Accra Stage
Bookings center on the top tier of Afrobeats and Ghana's own stars, filled out with DJs from the diaspora and the odd American rapper. Most recent first:
- 2025: Asake on top. King Paluta, Moliy, Mavo and TxC filled out the bill, while the DJ booth went to ADDJ, DJ Loft, K-Dawg and EZPass, and DJ Obi with Obi's House.
- 2022, still Afrochella: Burna Boy closed. Rema, Asake, Black Sherif, Ayra Starr, Stonebwoy, Gyakie, Camidoh, Juls and the American rapper Meek Mill also played.
- 2021, still Afrochella: Stonebwoy and Wizkid.
- Earliest years: Sarkodie, Wande Coal, Tiwa Savage, Samini and Distruction Boyz.
The brand now travels too. Detroit got its own edition in August 2025, on two stages at Bedrock's Douglass Site, with Davido and Kaytranada leading a bill that also had Gims, Ludmilla, Flavour, Tee Grizzley and Lojay. New York City hosted a Champion Sound DJ night under the AfroFuture name in September 2026. Those events sell their own tickets, separate from Accra.
Building a December Week in Accra Around It
Most visitors turn the festival into a longer holiday stay, and AfroFuture has added side events around the main weekend. The 2025 slate opened on December 27 with Battle of Jollof, a basketball game at the Bukom Boxing Arena. After the festival came Fashion Night Out at the Nubuke Museum (December 30) and a New Year's Eve party at La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. Expect separate tickets for most of them.
- Lodging: reserve well ahead. Accra hosts several big events in the same fortnight, and rooms close to the venue or downtown sell out first.
- Rides: traffic around El Wak Stadium is heavy at opening and closing. Arrange a driver or rideshare plan ahead instead of hunting for a car at 2 a.m.
- Entry to Ghana: visa and health requirements depend on your passport. Confirm them with a Ghanaian embassy or consulate well ahead of travel.
- Packaged trips: AfroFuture's Visit Africa program sells curated, culture-focused itineraries if you would rather not plan it all yourself.
Inside the Stadium on a Festival Night
Plan for an afternoon-to-late-night day on your feet. Wear light clothing and carry a phone power bank; bring a reusable bottle only if that year's rules allow it. Production has not always been smooth: in 2022 Ayra Starr slipped and fell mid-set, then publicly asked for the stage to be cleaned between performers, a reminder that a fast-growing festival can be uneven. Banned-item lists and bag rules are published ahead of each edition and revised often, so check the current rules on the AfroFuture site before you go. If you buy through Reserved Seat, your order is covered by a 100% guarantee.
Frequently asked questions
Is AfroFuture VIP worth it over GA?
It depends on how you handle a long night. Recent VIP descriptions list quicker entry, a better viewing zone, VIP-only restrooms and a private bar and food area. GA covers the grounds and the stage area.
Why did Afrochella change its name?
Coachella's organizers filed a trademark infringement suit in October 2022. After the December 2022 edition, the festival continued as AfroFuture.
Has AfroFuture announced 2026 dates?
Not as of October 2026. The Accra festival usually runs two days in late December; the 2025 edition was December 28 and 29.
Are the Detroit and New York AfroFuture events the same festival?
No. The Detroit edition in August 2025 and the New York Champion Sound event in September 2026 were separate events with their own tickets.
Which stadium hosts AfroFuture in Accra?
El Wak Stadium in Accra, Ghana. The only exception was December 2024, when the smaller Culture Beach Jam took the festival's dates at Accra Polo Beach.
