Largest and smallest, answered first
By permanent football seating, the largest NFL stadium is MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with 82,500 seats. The smallest is Highmark Stadium, the Buffalo Bills' new home in Orchard Park, New York, with 60,108. All 30 stadiums in the league sit inside that 22,000-seat spread, as of the 2026 season.
Two caveats change the answer depending on how you ask. If you count standing room, AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, wins: it lists 80,000 seats but can pack in more than 100,000 people, and SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, can also pass 100,000 for big events. And if you mean the fewest fans in the building this season, the answer is EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, which is capped at 42,507 while it is renovated.
Why 30 and not 32? The New York Giants and New York Jets share MetLife Stadium, and the Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Chargers share SoFi Stadium.
Why bowl size should change the seat you pick
Capacity is more than trivia when you are choosing a seat. The number of seats in a bowl tells you how far the top rows sit from the field, how much inventory exists for a given game, and how much the upper deck is likely to cost you in view.
In the 80,000-seat bowls
At MetLife Stadium, Lambeau Field and AT&T Stadium, the upper deck climbs high and far. The last rows of the top level are a long way from the sideline, and players look small. In these buildings, the front half of the second level (the mezzanine or club tier between the lower bowl and the upper deck) usually beats the back of the upper deck by a wide margin, and it often costs less than the lower bowl between the 20-yard lines. The upside of size is supply: more seats per game means more choice, even close to kickoff.
In the 60,000-seat bowls
Smaller stadiums tend to stack seats more steeply, so the top rows stay closer to the action. Highmark Stadium was built with a 34-degree incline in its seating bowl for exactly that reason. The trade-off is scarcity: fewer seats per game means a division rival or a December game with playoff stakes can sell through quickly, and the cheaper upper rows go first.
Roof type matters as much as seat count
Under a fixed roof (Caesars Superdome, Ford Field, U.S. Bank Stadium, Allegiant Stadium, SoFi Stadium's canopy), you can ignore weather and pick purely on angle and distance. In an open bowl, the sun side, the wind and a December kickoff all become part of the decision. Where a roof retracts, the home team decides whether it is open about 90 minutes before kickoff, and it stays open unless there is rain or lightning nearby, the temperature is below 40 degrees, or wind gusts top 40 mph.
Every stadium, grouped by size tier
The figures below are permanent football seats for a regular-season game, taken from each stadium's Wikipedia entry (which usually cites the team's media guide) and checked against Wikipedia's league-wide list. Where the two sources differ, the stadium entry is shown here and the gap is explained in the next section. Standing room and temporary seating are excluded.

Seats, standing room and special-event counts
Most capacity arguments come down to which number is being quoted. Three are in common use:
- Football seating is the count of fixed seats sold for an NFL game. It is what teams print in their media guides and what the tiers above use.
- Expanded capacity adds standing-room decks, temporary bleachers or field-level seats for a Super Bowl, a college title game, a concert or a soccer match. AT&T Stadium and SoFi Stadium both claim more than 100,000 this way. State Farm Stadium lists 72,200 seated and 78,600 with standing room, Reliant Stadium 80,000, and Caesars Superdome 76,468.
- Configured capacity can be lower than either. A concert with an end stage removes every seat behind it, and several NFL stadiums ran below their football count when set up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Attendance records can also exceed listed seating. MetLife Stadium, rated for 82,500, recorded 83,367 fans for a Jets–Giants game in October 2023. So when a headline calls a stadium the biggest, check whether it means seats for football or the largest crowd ever squeezed inside.
Where the published numbers conflict
Seat counts move almost every off-season as teams convert rows into suites, widen club seats or swap sections for social decks. Secondary sources then lag behind. Checked in October 2026, these are the stadiums where Wikipedia's league table and the individual stadium entry disagree most:
- Arrowhead Stadium: the stadium entry shows 76,416, citing the 2025 Chiefs media guide; the league table shows 73,426.
- Raymond James Stadium: 69,218 since 2022, while the league table still carries an older 65,890.
- Lincoln Financial Field: 67,594 versus 69,596.
- Gillette Stadium: 64,628 after the 2023 work, versus 66,829.
- Lucas Oil Stadium: 63,000 for football, versus 67,000.
- Huntington Bank Field: 67,431, with 67,895 appearing in other references.
None of these disputes touches the top three or the last place, but several shift a stadium four or five spots in the middle of the order. For an exact figure, the team's current media guide is the source to trust.
New, renamed and shrinking for 2026
- Buffalo opened a new building. Highmark Stadium opened on June 23, 2026, with 60,108 seats plus 2,892 standing-room places. A canopy covers roughly 65 percent of the seats, which matters if you are choosing between covered and uncovered rows for a November game. It is now the smallest permanent stadium in the league.
- Jacksonville is playing at reduced size. EverBank Stadium normally seats 67,814 but is limited to 42,507 in 2026, with the upper decks and the north end zone deck closed. Owners approved a temporary move to Camping World Stadium in Orlando for 2027, with a return planned for 2028. Before you buy for a game there, check the Jaguars' stadium page for which areas are open.
- Houston went back to an old name. The Texans' stadium, NRG Stadium from 2014 to 2026, is Reliant Stadium again. Its 72,220 seats did not change.
- Kansas City is plain Arrowhead again. The GEHA field-naming deal began in 2021, and the stadium has reverted to Arrowhead Stadium. It used the name Kansas City Stadium only during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Two more changes are scheduled. The Titans expect an enclosed replacement for Nissan Stadium in 2027 at about 60,000 seats, and the Browns plan a new stadium in Brook Park, Ohio, for 2029 at about 67,500. Both point the same way: smaller bowls with more premium seating, not bigger ones.
College stadiums dwarf the NFL
If the question is the biggest stadium in the country, no NFL building comes close. Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor seats 107,601 and Penn State's Beaver Stadium 106,304. Ohio Stadium (102,780), Kyle Field at Texas A&M (102,733) and LSU's Tiger Stadium (102,321) all clear 102,000 as well. On a combined list of American football stadiums, MetLife Stadium ranks only 15th.
The NFL's ceiling has economic roots. For years the league's blackout rule kept a home game off local television unless the non-premium seats sold out, which discouraged teams from building far past 80,000 seats. That rule has been suspended since 2015, and new stadiums now chase revenue through suites and clubs rather than raw seat count. At the other end, the league has generally not let a full-time team play in a stadium under 50,000 seats since 1971, which leaves today's range of about 60,000 to 82,500.
Many of the people filling those seats are traveling. Sports ETA estimated that 109.7 million spectators traveled 50 miles or more to sporting events in 2024, per its 2024 State of the Industry release, a figure that excludes youth and amateur events. If you are making that kind of trip, read the stadium's current bag and entry rules before you leave, since they differ by venue and change between seasons.
Frequently asked questions
Which NFL stadium has the most seats?
MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, with 82,500 permanent seats for football. AT&T Stadium can hold a bigger crowd, more than 100,000, once standing room is added to its 80,000 seats.
Which NFL stadium has the fewest seats?
Highmark Stadium, the Buffalo Bills' home since 2026, at 60,108 permanent seats. EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville holds fewer people this season, but only because renovation caps it at 42,507.
What is the largest crowd ever at an NFL game at MetLife Stadium?
A Jets–Giants game in October 2023 drew 83,367, more than the stadium's listed 82,500 seats.
Which NFL stadiums have a roof?
Caesars Superdome and Ford Field are fixed domes, U.S. Bank Stadium and Allegiant Stadium are fully enclosed, and SoFi Stadium sits under a fixed canopy. AT&T Stadium, Reliant Stadium, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, State Farm Stadium and Lucas Oil Stadium have retractable roofs.
Is Lambeau Field older than Soldier Field?
No. Soldier Field opened in 1924, but the Bears have only played there since 1971. Lambeau Field opened in 1957 and has the longer run of continuous NFL use.
Why do two websites show different capacities for the same stadium?
Teams change seat counts almost yearly, and older numbers stay online. Some sites also quote an expanded event capacity rather than fixed football seating.
