Upcoming Arizona State Sun Devils Football dates
Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
Sun Devils seats: start with the sun
For Arizona State Sun Devils football at Mountain America Stadium, the first question is when the game kicks off. When a game starts in daylight early in the season, sit west. The field is laid out north-south, which puts the late sun behind the west stands and straight into the faces of anyone sitting east. On that west side, the strongest view is in the lower bowl between the 30s, a few rows above the bench area. For November night games the weather is mild and either sideline works.
- Day games: west sideline, lower bowl.
- Night games late in the season: either sideline.
- Comfort: the west-side clubs or the North Loge Boxes.
- Lowest cost: end zones and upper corners.
A smaller, rebuilt stadium in Tempe
Built on campus in 1958, the venue carried the Sun Devil Stadium name until a sponsor deal renamed it in 2023. Construction in phases over five years, wrapped up in August 2019, reshaped it. Crews removed the upper deck, swapped the south end zone bleachers for a permanent stand, rebuilt the lower bowl on the west and then the east, and added an athletics building, a big video board and clubs at the north end. The 2018 listing put seating at 53,599, about 21,000 fewer than the 74,865 peak in 1989. Any source describing a 70,000-seat stadium is out of date.
West side
The main premium spaces: the Coach's Club, the Legends' Club and the Founders' Club. In the lower bowl, the front few rows sit behind team benches and sideline traffic, so a middle row is the better buy.
East and south
Additional clubs, and on the east side, a direct view into the afternoon sun.
North end
Field-level premium seating arrived here in 2025 with the North Loge Boxes. The big video board hangs above this end zone, so fans in the south end zone look straight at it.
End zones
The least expensive tickets and a fine choice if the atmosphere matters more than the angle. The student gate is at the southeast corner.
Games that sell out first in Tempe
The home slate opens around the turn of August into September and closes near Thanksgiving.
- Arizona. First played in 1899, the state rivalry awards the Territorial Cup to the winner. The two schools changed leagues together, joining the Pac-10 from the WAC in 1978 and the Big 12 in 2024. Count every game and Arizona is ahead by six or seven, since the two schools keep slightly different records; count only from 1958, when ASU gained university status, and the Sun Devils lead. A Tempe edition outsells every other home game. See Arizona Wildcats Football for the other side.
- Utah. Recent results have sharpened this one: Utah won big in 2023, and ASU beat the Utes at home in 2024.
- Ranked Big 12 visitors in prime time. Tempe night games draw the largest crowds.
For an easy, affordable first visit, choose a September nonconference game.
How ASU sells football tickets
The athletics department offers season packages, individual games and group deals. Giving to the athletics fund typically moves you up the line for prime season seats and parking, while students draw from a separate allotment.
Resale is how most fans get into the rivalry game, a night conference matchup or a game with a title on the line. Secondary-market prices respond to who is visiting, when the game starts, how the season is going and, for an afternoon kickoff, how hot it will be. The clubs and the west lower bowl command the most; end-zone and corner seats sit at the other end of the scale. A Reserved Seat order comes with a 100% guarantee.
Water, the clear bag and the light rail ride
As of the 2024 to 2025 gameday guide:
- Bags: the clear-bag rule allows a transparent plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no bigger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or a clutch smaller than roughly 4.5 by 6.5. Backpacks, oversized purses and camera bags stay outside.
- Water: you may carry in a sealed bottle smaller than 51 ounces, and fountains are on each concourse. On a hot September afternoon, drink more than you think you need.
- Gates and re-entry: doors open an hour and a half before kickoff. Once inside, you stay inside unless weather forces an evacuation.
- Alcohol: last call for beer and wine comes when the third quarter ends.
Take the train if you can. The Valley Metro stop at Veterans Way/College Avenue sits a short walk west of the stadium, and the guide lists 15-minute service in daytime, stretching to roughly 20 minutes after 7 p.m. on Saturdays. Driving means a paid campus lot and a wait after the game. Check the Sun Devil gameday guide for the current rules.
Devil Walk, Sparky and the tailgate lots
Roughly 150 minutes before kickoff, according to the 2024 to 2025 guide, players make the Devil Walk down Ellie Zeigler Way, joined by Sparky, the cheer and spirit teams and the marching band, which plays a brief set at the end.
- Sparky: a student vote in 1946 replaced the old Bulldog mascot with the Sun Devil.
- Stomp the Bus: before the team takes the field, the video board shows an enormous Sparky crushing the opponent's bus.
- Music: "Maroon and Gold" follows touchdowns and "Go Go Devils" follows field goals.
- Tailgating: permit lots open seven hours ahead and general lots 90 minutes after that. Set up only in your own surface-lot space; beer and wine are allowed, kegs and glass are not.
From Kush to the 2024 Big 12 title
The Sun Devils first took the field in 1897. Their 18 league championships span four conferences: the Border, the WAC, the Pac-12 and the Big 12. After 46 years in the Pac-10 and its Pac-12 successor, ASU switched to the Big 12 in 2024.
- 1957: Dan Devine's team went 10 and 0.
- 1958 to 1979: Frank Kush, Devine's assistant, went 176-54-1, took the first three Fiesta Bowls, and capped a perfect 12 and 0 season in 1975 by edging Nebraska 17 to 14 in that bowl.
- 1986 season: a first Pac-10 crown and a victory over Michigan in the 1987 Rose Bowl.
- 1996 season: the field took Kush's name the same night ASU blanked No. 1 Nebraska 19 to 0, followed by an unbeaten regular season, and a 1997 Rose Bowl loss to Ohio State in the final seconds.
- 2024: a 45 to 19 Big 12 Championship win over Iowa State in the first season in the league, a College Football Playoff first-round bye and a double-overtime Peach Bowl loss to Texas.
Famous former Sun Devils include Mike Haynes, Jake Plummer, Terrell Suggs and Pat Tillman. The building has hosted bigger stages than a Saturday, too: Fiesta Bowls from 1971 through 2006, the Arizona Cardinals from 1988 to 2005, and Super Bowl XXX in 1996. Its biggest college crowd, 80,470, came for the 1999 Fiesta Bowl.
