Choosing a seat in a 100,000-seat stadium
Start with the sun. Early-season day games in College Station, Gainesville, Baton Rouge and Tuscaloosa are brutally hot, so trade yard-line position for shade without hesitation. Then decide how high to sit.
- Lower-level sideline: the premium view. In the biggest stadiums, rows toward the top of the lower bowl near midfield see the field better than the front rows, which sit below the players and staff standing on the sideline.
- Upper deck between the 30-yard lines: the value seat. These decks are tall and steep, but the sideline angle shows every play develop.
- Upper-deck end zones: the least comfortable seats in the building, far from the action and exposed.
- Student sections: students fill large blocks and stand for the whole game, so sit next to them only if you plan to stand too.
- Visiting fans: allocations usually land in an end zone or an upper corner.
For basketball at Rupp Arena or Bridgestone Arena, the lower-level sideline is best and the upper-level sideline is the value. Skip the low rows directly behind the baskets, where the stanchion and glass get in the way.
Sixteen schools and how the league got here
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) began in 1932, when 13 members of the Southern Conference broke away, and it is based in Birmingham, Alabama. It reached 16 schools when Oklahoma and Texas arrived in 2024, and with that expansion it scrapped its East and West divisions. All 16 play SEC football in 2025–26.
- Founding members still in the league: Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU, Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, Auburn and Alabama.
- Added in 1991: Arkansas and South Carolina.
- Added in 2012: Missouri and Texas A&M.
- Added in 2024: Oklahoma and Texas.
Three original members are gone: Sewanee left after the 1940 season, Georgia Tech departed in 1964 and later joined the ACC, and Tulane exited in 1966.
Football on the largest scale in college sports
Five SEC stadiums top 100,000 seats: Texas A&M's Kyle Field at 102,733, LSU's Tiger Stadium at 102,321, Tennessee's Neyland Stadium at 101,915, Texas's DKR–Texas Memorial Stadium at 100,119 and Alabama's Bryant–Denny Stadium at 100,077. The 2022 national attendance table had SEC schools in each of the top seven spots for average home crowd, and Texas was not yet a member.
Program guides are grouped here by when each school joined. From the 1932 core: Tennessee Volunteers football, LSU Tigers Football, Alabama Crimson Tide Football, Georgia Bulldogs Football, Florida Gators Football, Auburn Tigers Football, Kentucky Wildcats Football, Mississippi State Bulldogs Football and Vanderbilt Commodores football. From 1991: South Carolina Gamecocks football and Arkansas Razorbacks Football. From 2012: Texas A&M Aggies football and Missouri Tigers football. From 2024: Texas Longhorns football and Oklahoma Sooners football. For Knoxville, the Neyland Stadium page breaks down the seating in detail.
- Size cuts both ways. A 100,000-seat stadium has plenty of seats for nonconference games, yet rivalry and ranked matchups still sell out.
- The smallest house sells fastest. After its renovation, Vanderbilt's stadium holds about 35,000, so a big-name visitor can sell it out quickly.
- Night games. An LSU night kickoff at Tiger Stadium is the atmosphere fans ask for most.
December in Atlanta and the bowl tie-ins
The SEC was the first Division I conference to hold a football championship game, starting in 1992. Atlanta has hosted it every year since 1994, in the Georgia Dome until Mercedes-Benz Stadium took over in 2017, and the current agreement lasts through 2027. With divisions gone, the game now pairs the top two teams in the standings in early December. The two schools usually receive ticket allocations for their donors, and because the matchup is known only when the regular season ends, resale prices swing hard once it is set.
- Bowl partners for 2026: two matchups face the Big Ten, the ReliaQuest Bowl plus the Citrus Bowl and Music City Bowl; two involve the Big 12, the Texas Bowl and the Liberty Bowl. Expect these pairings to shift whenever contracts are renewed.
- The playoff: the 12-team playoff also draws heavily from this league. Its quarterfinal and semifinal rotation includes New Orleans, home of the Sugar Bowl, and Atlanta, where the Peach Bowl is played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Basketball: Rupp, Austin and tournament week in Nashville
Basketball is the league's second big ticket. While in the conference, SEC schools have won 12 NCAA men's championships: Kentucky eight, Florida three and Arkansas one. In 2025, a record 14 of the 16 teams made the NCAA tournament, and Florida won its third title by beating Houston 65–63 in San Antonio.
- Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky's home since 1976, holds roughly 20,500 following its 2019 renovation.
- Moody Center in Austin opened in 2022 and seats 10,763 for Texas basketball.
- The women's game: Tennessee has won the national championship eight times; South Carolina has won it in 2017, 2022 and 2024; LSU and Texas A&M have one apiece. South Carolina reached the 2026 final and lost to UCLA.
The men's tournament calls Bridgestone Arena in downtown Nashville home and had been played there 13 times through 2026. Every team qualifies, and the top four seeds get a double bye straight to the quarterfinals. Kentucky has won it 31 times; Arkansas took the 2026 title by beating Vanderbilt 86–75. The tournament champion earns the automatic NCAA bid, separate from the regular-season crown. The early sessions are the easiest tickets, and the week makes a natural Nashville trip.
Donor priority, resale and game-day planning
SEC schools sell season tickets first and assign seats by priority points (a ranking built from annual donations and years of continuous purchases). At the highest-demand programs, the best seats require a yearly gift, and season-ticket holders absorb most of the seats for marquee games. If you have no giving history, the resale market is how you reach the Atlanta championship, a Saturday night in Baton Rouge or a rivalry game. Reserved Seat backs every order with a 100% guarantee.
- Book a room early. College towns such as Athens, Tuscaloosa and Oxford fill their hotels well ahead of big home games.
- Bring the right bag. Clear-bag rules (small, transparent bags only) were in force across SEC stadiums as of the 2025 season; confirm the stadium's rule before game day.
- Arrive for the tailgate. Tailgates on campus get going long before kickoff, and certain lots are held for donors.
Schedules and championship information come first from the SEC website.
Frequently asked questions
Which side of an SEC stadium is in the shade?
It depends on the stadium's orientation, so check the team guide. For hot early-season day games, shade beats a better yard line every time.
Are upper-deck seats worth it at SEC games?
Between the 30-yard lines, yes; they are the value seats despite the height. Avoid the upper-deck end zones, which are the worst seats in these stadiums.
When did Texas and Oklahoma join the SEC?
Both arrived in 2024. The move made it a 16-school league, and the old two-division format was dropped.
Where is the SEC football championship held?
It is played in early December in Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The city has held every edition since 1994, with a deal in place through 2027.
Which SEC tournament sessions are easiest to attend?
The early rounds at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. All 16 teams qualify, so the opening sessions have the most availability, while the later rounds draw the most demand.
