Upcoming BYU Cougars Football dates
Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
Choosing your LaVell Edwards Stadium seat
For a BYU game, start on the west sideline between the 30-yard lines, in the middle of the lower bowl. You get the best angle on the field and the sun behind you for daytime kickoffs. If you care more about the setting than the line of scrimmage, sit higher, where the Wasatch Range rises over the rim of the bowl. LaVell Edwards Stadium seats 62,073 on the Brigham Young University campus in Provo, Utah, and the Cougars play there from late summer into late November.
- Best view: lower sideline, middle rows, between the 30s.
- Best for comfort: the west side on afternoon dates.
- Best scenery: upper rows of the bowl.
- Best price: the curved end zones.
West side, east side and the end zone curve
The field is natural Kentucky bluegrass and runs north to south, with the press box on the west sideline. As the afternoon goes on, the sun drops into the western sky, so west-side fans have it behind them while east-side fans look into it. For a September afternoon game, that is the most important seat decision you will make. At night, either side is fine.
The end zones curve around the field. They are the most affordable way into the stadium and put you right on top of goal-line action, but plays at the opposite end flatten out. Middle rows of the lower sideline give the best overall picture.
Near or away from the students
Since 2013, BYU's students have sat together in one section, admitted through the ROC Pass. That area is the loudest in the stadium. Sit near it for energy; if you are pulling for the visitors or bringing young kids, pick a section farther away.
Utah week and the rest of the demand curve
One game sets the top of BYU's market: the Holy War with Utah, played for the Beehive Boot. The schools cannot agree on how many games they have played. Utah dates the series to 1896, when BYU was still Brigham Young Academy, and BYU dates it to 1922, but Utah leads by either count. Utah joined the Big 12 in 2024, making the game a conference meeting for the first time since 2010, and BYU won by three points or fewer in both 2024 and 2025. A Provo edition is the hardest ticket of any season. For the Utes' side, see Utah Utes Football.
- Utah State: the in-state game for the Old Wagon Wheel.
- Ranked Big 12 teams, homecoming and national night games: the next tier of demand.
- Notre Dame and other national programs: historically the biggest crowds; the record of 66,247 came against Notre Dame in 1993 (see Notre Dame Fighting Irish Football).
September games against smaller programs are where you will find seats most easily.
Altitude, weather and getting to Provo
The stadium sits about 4,649 feet above sea level. The air is thin and dry, so drink more water than you think you need, especially on a warm afternoon. After sunset the temperature can fall fast, and November night games call for real cold-weather gear.
Flying in, you land at Salt Lake City International, roughly 45 miles north; drive south on I-15 and exit at University Parkway. Campus lots fill early for rivalry and night games, and BYU publishes a parking map online. Ticket, bag and parking rules can change, so read BYU's ticket policies before you leave.
ROC Passes, donors and the resale market
Season tickets are placed first, with location priority tied to giving to the athletic department's donor program. Students buy the ROC Pass for admission. Single-game tickets go on sale once season seats are set, and everything is delivered as mobile tickets.
Most September games still have primary seats during game week. Utah, ranked Big 12 visitors and prime-time games run out, and that is when resale becomes the main source. Resale prices react to BYU's record, the opponent, the start time and the forecast; they usually slip late for lesser games and rise for the big ones. Every Reserved Seat order carries a 100% guarantee.
Edwards, the Miracle Bowl and 1984
BYU first played in 1922 and spent decades in the Rocky Mountain, Skyline, Western Athletic and Mountain West conferences, then went independent from 2011 to 2022 before joining the Big 12 in 2023. LaVell Edwards coached from 1972 to 2000 and won 19 of the school's conference titles. His 1980 team trailed SMU 45–25 in the Holiday Bowl with about four minutes to go and won 46–45, a game remembered as the Miracle Bowl. Four years later, a 13–0 BYU won the national championship. Quarterback Ty Detmer added the school's only Heisman Trophy in 1990.
The stadium opened as Cougar Stadium on October 2, 1964, with 28,812 seats, grew to 35,000 in 1968 and to 65,000 with a 1982 expansion, and took Edwards's name in 2000. Later renovations added premium seating and trimmed capacity, to 63,470 by 2011 and 62,073 from 2024. Expect blue and white in the stands, Cosmo the Cougar on the sideline and "The Cougar Song" after scores. BYU is a university of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and that affiliation sets much of the tone of a Provo Saturday.
Frequently asked questions
Which side of LaVell Edwards Stadium should I sit on for a day game?
The west side. The field runs north to south, so the west sideline, where the press box is, keeps the afternoon sun behind you while the east side faces it.
Where are the best mountain views at a BYU game?
In the upper rows of the bowl, where the Wasatch Range is visible above the stadium rim.
Where do BYU students sit?
Students have sat together in one section since 2013, using the ROC Pass. It is the loudest part of the stadium, so visiting fans may prefer to sit elsewhere.
Does the altitude in Provo affect fans?
It can. At about 4,649 feet the air is thin and dry, so drink water and bring layers for night games, when temperatures drop quickly.
When is the BYU–Utah game hardest to get into?
When it is played in Provo. Since Utah joined the Big 12 in 2024 it is a conference game again and the top-demand date of any season.
