Independence Bowl Tickets

50th game · Tue., Dec. 22, 2026, 7:30 p.m. CT · mostly bleachers

Shreveport's bowl turns 50 on a December weeknight: pick a sideline row above the benches, find a seat with a back if you can, and dress for the cold.

Upcoming Independence Bowl dates

Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.

Independence Bowl seating in brief

Aim for a lower-level sideline seat between the 30-yard lines, roughly 15 rows up or higher, or the front of the upper level on a sideline. The 50th Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl starts at 7:30 p.m. local time (8:30 Eastern) on Tuesday, December 22, 2026, at Independence Stadium in Shreveport, with ESPN televising.

Three facts shape the choice:

  • Most seats are metal bleachers. Seats with backs are limited, so if comfort matters, look for them specifically.
  • The game is entirely after dark. Sun and shade do not matter; sightlines and warmth do.
  • The stadium is much bigger than recent crowds. Only 30,298 attended in 2025, so outside the prime sideline sections, supply is usually ample.

Lower ring, upper deck and where the chairbacks are

The lower level, sections 100 to 130, circles the field; its sideline stretch runs from goal line to goal line right behind the team benches. The upper level, sections 200 to 230, rises above it along both sidelines and the south end. The west side holds the press box and the box seats, and the main video board hangs over the north end zone.

Chairbacks (individual seats with backrests) are the exception rather than the rule. A single seating guide lists them in 102, 103, 114, 115 and 116 and in portions of 101 and 104. Because only one source says so, verify on the listing before you pay more for a backrest. Rows run A through Z and then AA through UU, according to the same guide.

Capacity is reported inconsistently. Wikipedia's bowl article says 63,000, following a 2008 addition; the stadium article says 50,000. Either way, recent crowds have filled well under that.

Rows to target, rows to skip

Target

  • Lower sideline, 30 to 30, row 15 and up. High enough to see over players and staff standing at the benches, close enough to feel the game.
  • Front of the upper level, sideline. Height shows how plays develop and keeps both end zones in view, useful in a stadium this wide.
  • End zones for families. Lowest demand, with room to spread out on the bleachers.

Skip

  • The first rows behind the benches. They look close on a chart, but the near sideline disappears behind standing players.
  • Paying extra for a seat upgrade to stay warm. A cushion and layers do more on cold bleachers. Only the suites high on the south end have a roof.

Selection weekend and demand in Shreveport

Conference tie-ins (contracts that hold a bowl slot for a league's teams) set the field. For 2026, Wikipedia names the Big 12 and Conference USA, unchanged from 2025. A named partner does not always send a team: in 2025 the Big 12 spot went unused, so Conference USA's Louisiana Tech faced Sun Belt member Coastal Carolina.

  • Before selection weekend in early December: listings are thin and priced on guesses.
  • Just after selection: lower sideline seats reprice fast if a nearby school gets the bid. Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas schools can drive in; an East Coast team cannot.
  • Final days: because the building dwarfs a 30,000 crowd, end zone and upper-level prices often ease as kickoff nears.

No school has appeared more than Louisiana Tech, with seven trips; its campus in Ruston is about 70 miles away, and its games show what a drive-in fan base does to turnout. The weeknight date just before Christmas adds holiday travel costs for visitors, which can keep the away crowd small.

Lots, gates and the clear-bag policy

Shreveport is built around driving. Interstate 20 and Interstate 49 bring most fans in, with rideshare as the main alternative. Shreveport Regional Airport is about two miles from the stadium, and Dallas–Fort Worth is roughly three hours west by car.

  • Parking: in 2025 the bowl offered four lots, Blue, Brown, Gold and Silver. Premium spaces were limited in number; Blue passes could be bought ahead of time or on game day.
  • Tailgating: the stadium is on the fairgrounds, and tailgate spaces are booked through the State Fair of Louisiana.
  • Gates: entry starts two hours ahead, and the gate is tied to your section. Gate 1 takes 116–124 and 216–224; 100–102, 200–202, 125–130 and 225–230 at Gate 2; 103–108 and 203–205 at Gate 3; 109–115 and 212–215 at Gate 4.
  • Leaving: postgame traffic is sent one way to empty the lots faster.

The 2025 bag rule: one clear bag (plastic, vinyl or PVC, 12 by 6 by 12 inches at most) or a clear one-gallon freezer bag, and a small clutch roughly 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Coolers, umbrellas, vapes and cigarettes, and any outside food or drink were not allowed. Read the bowl's stadium rules before you go. Reserved Seat backs every order with a 100% guarantee.

Fifty years: anniversary events and the stadium

The bowl was born in 1976 and named for the U.S. Bicentennial. By its own count, only ten bowls are older. The 50th edition brings an All-Time Team countdown running from July into early December. A Kickoff Dinner featuring Tyrann Mathieu, the former LSU and NFL defensive back, was announced and later postponed, with no new date yet; the bowl's website lists the final calendar of events. The bowl also points out that Fernando Mendoza, the No. 1 selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, is the third player from this game to go first overall; he played in the 2023 edition for California.

Independence Stadium itself is older than the bowl. Built in 1924, it was State Fair Stadium until the 1981 renaming. The City of Shreveport owns it, and the field has been FieldTurf since 2010.

Snow, shootouts and sponsors

McNeese State beat Tulsa 20–16 in the first game. Over the decades the field has drawn from seven conferences (SEC, ACC, Big 12, Mountain West, Conference USA, the American, the Sun Belt) and from independents Army and BYU.

  • 1995: the record crowd, 48,835, came for LSU against Michigan State.
  • 2000, the Snow Bowl: Mississippi State won by two in overtime, 43–41, over Texas A&M while a rare snowstorm hit Shreveport.
  • 2015: Virginia Tech topped Tulsa 55–52; the 76 first-half points set a bowl record.
  • 2020: canceled on December 20 for lack of eligible teams in the pandemic season.

Recent finals: 2021, UAB over BYU by three (31–28); 2022, Houston over Louisiana, 23–16; 2023, Texas Tech over California, 34–14; 2024, Army over Louisiana Tech, 27–6; 2025, Louisiana Tech over Coastal Carolina, 23–14.

Sponsors, in order: Poulan/Weed Eater from 1990 to 1997, Sanford from 1998 to 2000, MainStay Funds from 2001 to 2003, PetroSun from 2006 to 2008, AdvoCare V100 from 2009 to 2013, Duck Commander in 2014, Camping World in 2015 and 2016, Walk-On's from 2017 to 2019, and Radiance Technologies from 2020, with the unsponsored name used in the gaps. Radiance's deal now runs at least through 2027.
