Texas Bowl seats: the short version
Buy a 100-level sideline seat between the 20-yard lines, in the middle rows of the lower bowl, or a 300-level sideline seat if you want height and club comforts. Skip the pop-up end zone seating at field level. That is the whole plan for the Kinder's Texas Bowl, which schedules list for the evening of New Year's Eve, Thursday, December 31, 2026, on ESPN in Houston; the exact start time comes with the team announcement.
A movable roof and full air conditioning take heat, cold and rain off the table. The game matches a Big 12 team against a Southeastern Conference (SEC) team, and that SEC side often decides how hard the lower-bowl sidelines are to get.
NRG Stadium's 100, 300 and 500 tiers
Built in 2002 for the Houston Texans, this was the NFL's first venue with a roof that opens, its two panels parting over midfield. Football capacity is roughly 72,000, with room to grow to around 80,000. The Astrodome stands in the same complex, which also hosts the city's famous livestock show and rodeo.
100 level
Seats closest to the turf. The sideline sections between the 20s are the best seats in the house. Middle rows beat the first few, which look up at the field from behind the benches.
300 level
The middle tier, including much of the building's 7,000-plus club seats. Sideline seats here look down on the full field from a comfortable height and access to club amenities.
500 level
The upper deck and the budget option. Sideline 500s are far better than upper end zone seats.
Suites sit between the main tiers and along the top of the building.
Rows and areas that underdeliver
- Pop-up end zone seating at field level. These are folding chairs placed ahead of the fixed rows; they sit nearly at turf height and give a bad angle on anything beyond the goal line. They are the weakest seats on the lower level.
- The first rows behind the benches. Close, but players and staff fill your sightline for much of the game.
- Upper end zones. Distant and angled. If you are going to the 500 level, pay a little more for the sideline.
How the SEC draw moves Texas Bowl demand
Conference tie-ins (agreements that hold a bowl berth for a given league) fill both slots. The best teams from each conference head to the playoff or bigger bowls, so this game draws from the middle of the standings, yet the SEC pick frequently has a large fan base a short drive from Houston. These agreements are reset every few years; the Big 12 against SEC arrangement is today's, not forever's.
- Nearby schools fill the building. The record, 71,307, came when LSU met Texas Tech to close the 2015 season, and Houston against LSU in 2025 drew 63,867.
- The early-December announcement is when lower-bowl sideline prices typically jump, especially if an SEC program with a large fan base is picked.
- Upper-level prices often soften near kickoff when one school travels lightly.
- The date: the game has moved around late December and early January, and New Year's Eve brings competition from parties and other plans around town.
Before the public sale, the bowl's priority list is handled through the Houston Texans. Reserved Seat orders include a 100% guarantee.
Red Line, color-coded lots and clear bags
Find the stadium at 8400 Kirby Drive, inside Loop 610 on the city's south side.
- METRORail Red Line: trains from downtown pass Midtown and the Medical Center before stopping at Stadium Park/Astrodome, right next to the grounds. For many visitors it is the easiest way in.
- Parking: color-coded surface lots surround the stadium. They fill early for big events, and getting out afterward can be slow.
- Rideshare: Kirby Drive and Fannin Street jam after the game; walking a few blocks to meet your driver often saves time.
- Bags: the venue uses the NFL-style clear-bag standard, which permits a single transparent bag no larger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches, a clear gallon-size storage bag, or a small clutch. There is a posted no re-entry policy.
Each event can set its own rules, so read the Kinder's Texas Bowl site before you go. For a car-free trip, book near a Red Line stop downtown, in Midtown or around the Medical Center; rooms right by the stadium are the shortest walk but vanish fast when a big fan base is headed to town. If the game lands on New Year's Eve, expect downtown events to compete for rides and dinner reservations.
Houston's bowl lineage and the Texas Bowl's many names
Houston has hosted bowls on and off since 1959: first the Bluebonnet (through 1987), then the Houston Bowl (2000 to 2005), and since 2006 this one. The first Texas Bowl went to Rutgers, 37–10 over Kansas State, and the pandemic wiped out the 2020 edition. ESPN Events is the owner and operator, Lone Star Sports & Entertainment handles local management, and the bowl names DePelchin Children's Center, a local child welfare nonprofit, as its community partner.
