The TDECU seat answer for a hot Saturday

For a Houston Cougars home game, reserve the south side if you can. The field runs roughly east to west, which puts the late-day sun in the southwestern sky: the south stands have it behind them, while the north sideline looks into it. The south side also holds the club seats, loge boxes and suites, and its upper level has the downtown skyline in view. For the game itself, sideline seats between the 30-yard lines on either side are the best look.

Home games are at TDECU Stadium, an open-air stadium of about 40,000 seats on the University of Houston campus, under three miles from downtown. The season runs from late August or early September to late November, and UH has played in the Big 12 Conference since 2023.

A bowl you walk down into

TDECU Stadium sits the field about 25 feet below the main concourse. You enter at the top of the lower bowl, roughly 20,000 seats, and walk down to most rows. The designers chose the east-west field after a sun study.

  • South lower bowl: the club seats, with loge boxes on the concourse and suites one level up, all far closer to the field than press-level suites at most college stadiums.
  • South 300 level: the upper deck with the skyline view, and the sun behind you.
  • North sideline: an equally good angle on the field, but facing the sun for day games. Section 129 and the north loge boxes come with access to the Yeoman Red and White Hall, a northeast-corner club whose walls celebrate the program's past.
  • Row choice: rows from the middle of the lower bowl see more than the front row, where players, coaches and staff along the sideline block the closest part of the field.

Most seats are benches. The stadium has about 3,800 chairbacks, including Sections 127 and 131, so check the listing if a seat back matters to you.

Ends with personalities

  • East end zone (painted "Cougars"): home to students and the Spirit of Houston band. It is the loudest part of the building and a poor choice if you want to sit down.
  • West end zone (painted "Houston"): the architects left the northwest upper corner open on purpose, so downtown's towers appear through the opening. It is the more relaxed end and usually the better-value one.

Heat is the main thing to plan around. Early-season games are hot and humid even after dark, so for a late August or September kickoff, a south-side or covered seat is worth paying for.

Big 12 dates that fill the stadium

Moving to the Big 12 in 2023 brought old Southwest Conference opponents back, and they set the demand:

  • Texas Tech: a former SWC rival now back in conference play, with the all-time series close to even.
  • Baylor and TCU: two more former SWC foes reunited in the Big 12.
  • Rice: the crosstown rival and most-played opponent, with the Bayou Bucket at stake. UH has won far more of these meetings, though the series is not annual anymore.
  • Texas and Texas A&M: historic opponents now in the SEC and rarely on the schedule.

Ranked visitors, Texas schools with large fan bases near Houston, homecoming and late-season games with bowl stakes draw best, especially when UH is ranked. Early nonconference games are the easiest and least expensive way in.

Rail, garages and Cullen Boulevard

METRORail's Southeast Line is the simplest way to the game; the stop is roughly a football field from the southwest gate, with trains to downtown. Drivers can use the stadium garage or color-coded surface lots, and as of the 2026 season all parking passes, season or single game, arrive on your phone. Current lots are listed on the UH football parking page.

On game days the university closes Cullen Boulevard near the stadium. Student groups tailgate in Shasta Square just east of the stadium, the alumni association runs Party on the Plaza next to them, and RVs have used lot 16B off Elgin Street. Outside the northeast entrance, Legends Plaza has a statue of Bill Yeoman and displays for Andre Ware and Lombardi Award winner Wilson Whitley.

Getting UH tickets

Season tickets go on sale first, and giving to Cougar Pride, the athletics donor program, usually moves you up the line for prime locations. Students get seats through a dedicated program and sit in the east end zone. Public single-game sales come later, and both tickets and parking are mobile.

By Big 12 standards the stadium is compact, and it does not take a huge crowd to fill it. Nonconference games are usually easy to find. For Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU, a ranked visitor or a late game in a title race, the primary supply can disappear and resale becomes the main route. Resale demand climbs after a strong start and drops when heat or a weak opponent keeps casual fans away. Reserved Seat orders come with no digital transfer fees.

Two names, one stadium, and an offensive tradition

TDECU, the credit union whose name is on the building, combined with another Houston credit union in 2024 and now operates as Space City Financial, with a matching stadium name announced. The university's fan guide for 2026 still says TDECU Stadium, so you may see either name. The building opened in 2014 on the former site of Robertson Stadium. Bags are screened at entry and rules on size, re-entry and payment change each season; read the Houston fan guide before you go.

The Cougars first played in 1946 and have 11 conference titles. Bill Yeoman, coach from 1962 to 1986 and the winningest in school history, built the Veer option, won four Southwest Conference titles and won the Cotton Bowl twice, following the 1976 and 1979 seasons. His 1964 signing of Warren McVea integrated major-college football in Texas. The run-and-shoot years produced 1989 Heisman winner Andre Ware and David Klingler, who threw 11 touchdown passes in one game. Case Keenum, the NCAA career passing leader, quarterbacked the 13–1 club of 2011. Four years later another 13–1 team won the Peach Bowl over Florida State, the first New Year's Six victory in school history. The best final rankings are No. 4 (1976), No. 5 (1979) and No. 8 (2015).

The Cougar Paw, a raised right hand with the ring finger folded down, began as a taunt. Before a 1953 trip to Austin, Shasta, the live cougar, caught a paw in a cage door and lost a toe; Longhorn fans flashed the hand sign to ridicule UH. Cougars fans claimed it as their own, and it stuck after a 30–0 win over Texas in 1976.

Frequently asked questions

Which side of TDECU Stadium is better for a day game?

The south side. With the field running east to west, the afternoon sun is to the south and west, so south stands have it behind them and the north sideline faces it.

Where is the skyline view at TDECU Stadium?

From the south 300 level, and through the open northwest corner of the upper deck beyond the west end zone.

Are there chairback seats at TDECU Stadium?

Yes, but most seats are benches. There are about 3,800 chairbacks, including Sections 127 and 131.

Is it TDECU Stadium or Space City Financial Stadium?

Both names refer to the same building. The sponsor announced the Space City Financial name, but as of 2026 the university still calls it TDECU Stadium.

Can I ride the train to a UH game?

Yes. The Southeast Line of METRORail has a stop about a football field's length from the southwest gate.

Where do students and the band sit?

Behind the east goal line, where the end zone reads "Cougars."
