Upcoming Pittsburgh Panthers Football dates
Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
Pitt seats at Acrisure Stadium, short version
For most Pitt games, a middle-row sideline seat in the 100 level is the best buy, the 200-level club is the comfort pick for a cold November date, and the 500 level between the 20-yard lines is the value play. The Panthers play home games at Acrisure Stadium, the 68,400-seat home of the Pittsburgh Steelers on the North Shore, from late August or early September through November.
Pitt crowds are usually smaller than Steelers crowds, so outside the biggest rivalry dates you can often be choosy about section and row.
Reading the 100, 200 and 500 levels
The stadium is a horseshoe: three tiers of grandstand along each sideline, upper bleachers across the north end, and an open south end facing the Ohio River and the downtown skyline. According to the stadium's guest guide, seats are numbered in three levels.
- 100 level (sections 101–152): the lower bowl. Middle rows on the sideline balance closeness and perspective; the first few rows put the team bench and sideline staff in your sightline.
- 200-level club (sections 205–240): a good sideline angle plus indoor club space, which earns its keep when the wind comes off the river.
- 500 level (sections 504–541): the upper deck. Between the 20s you see formations and the whole field for less.
Pitt's student section, the Panther Pitt, founded in 2003, is the loudest part of the building, and the team celebrates in front of it after home wins. Confirm its exact sections, and which sideline Pitt uses, on the map attached to your listing.
The open south end, wind and November weather
- South end zone: the scenic choice, with the skyline beyond the field. It is also the end where wind and weather blow straight in.
- North-end bleachers: the lowest prices in the building, with the longest look to the opposite goal line.
- Exposed rows late in the season: a riverside stadium in November can be cold, wet and windy. Back rows tucked under the deck above give some cover. Umbrellas may come in, but you cannot open them in the stands.
If you are going to a late-season game, the club level or a covered back row is worth paying a little more for.
Backyard Brawl years and other big Pitt dates
Pitt's schedule mixes ACC opponents with non-conference series that come and go, so demand depends on which names appear in a given year.
- West Virginia: the Backyard Brawl dates to 1895 and is among the most-played rivalries in the sport. After a 10-year gap it returned for 2022 through 2025, and each school won both of its home games.
- Penn State: first played in 1893. The series came back from 2016 to 2019 after a 16-year pause, and Penn State's athletic director has said an extension will not be considered before 2030.
- Syracuse: an annual game since 1955 that moved with both schools from the Big East to the ACC.
- Notre Dame: a series that began in 1909 and now appears periodically under Notre Dame's scheduling arrangement with the ACC.
- Cincinnati: the River City Rivalry, played for the Paddlewheel Trophy, returned in 2023 and 2024.
Expect the fullest stadium for a West Virginia or Penn State visit, Notre Dame and ACC games with title implications. September non-conference games and unranked league opponents are the easiest seats to find. Check the current schedule before planning around a rival.
Prowl, riverboat horns and the gold lights
- Panthers Prowl: roughly two hours before kickoff, players walk into the stadium outside Gate A between lines of fans.
- March to Victory: about an hour before kickoff, the Pitt Band parades from Tony Dorsett Drive along General Robinson Street to a stage on Art Rooney Avenue.
- Sweet Caroline: the video board leads the crowd in a version that swaps in Let's Go Pitt.
- Gateway Clipper horns: riverboats sound off after Pitt touchdowns.
- Victory lights: after a win, the top of the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland glows gold, a custom since 1983 that gained a blue beam in 2018.
Tailgating happens in the North Shore lots under the operator's rules, though not in the Champions Garage. Fans coming from the Oakland campus usually rely on transit, shuttles or rideshare.
Riding the T to the North Shore and the stadium rules
Pittsburgh's light rail, the T, has two stops for the stadium: Allegheny Station, connected to the stadium by a raised walkway, and North Side Station. Riding in from downtown skips the worst of the North Shore traffic. Stadium parking is sold in advance, and the Gateway Clipper fleet has offered game-day river service. See the stadium's parking and directions page for current options.
As of the 2026 season, the stadium enforced a clear-bag rule (transparent plastic, vinyl or PVC, under 12 by 6 by 12 inches), plus a clutch up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Factory-sealed plastic bottles of water or soda up to 24 ounces were allowed, purchases were cashless and re-entry was not permitted. The stadium's A to Z guide has the current list.
How Pitt seats are sold and resold
Renewing season-ticket holders get first call, and because the prime sideline seats follow donations to Pitt athletics, the area between the 30s belongs mostly to donors. Students have a university system of their own. Once those groups are served, single-game sales open, and for many dates there is plenty left.
The picture changes for the Backyard Brawl, Penn State or Notre Dame, when visiting fans arrive in large numbers and the stadium can approach capacity. For those dates, most fans find their best seats on resale, where the matchup, Pitt's standing in the polls, the start time and the weather all push prices around. Every Reserved Seat order includes guaranteed entry.
Nine titles, Dorsett and a century as an independent
Pitt has played football since 1890. It stayed independent for roughly 100 years, joined the Big East in 1991 and moved to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) in 2013; it plays in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS, the top tier of Division I). The school claims nine national championships: 1915, 1916, 1918, 1929, 1931, 1934, 1936, 1937 and 1976. The last two came from the major wire-service polls, and the 1976 team, led by Heisman winner Tony Dorsett, finished unbeaten with a Sugar Bowl win over Georgia. Pop Warner and Jock Sutherland coached most of the early title teams.
Pitt sits near the top of the list of colleges with Pro Football Hall of Famers, among them Dan Marino, Tony Dorsett, Mike Ditka, Aaron Donald and Larry Fitzgerald. The 2021 team won the ACC outright. The 1921 game against West Virginia was the first live radio broadcast of a college football game in the United States. Pitt played at Pitt Stadium in Oakland from 1925 to 1999, used Three Rivers Stadium in 2000 and moved into the current stadium, then named Heinz Field, in 2001.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best value seat for a Pitt game?
The 500 level between the 20-yard lines. It is high, but you see the whole field, and it usually costs less than lower sideline seats.
Which end of Acrisure Stadium is open?
The south end, which faces the Ohio River and the downtown skyline. It offers the view but also lets wind and weather in.
What section numbers are on each level at Acrisure Stadium?
The 100 level runs 101 to 152, the 200-level club 205 to 240 and the 500 level 504 to 541, according to the stadium's guest guide.
Does Pitt still play West Virginia and Penn State?
Only in some years. The Backyard Brawl ran from 2022 to 2025, and Penn State has said it will not consider extending that series before 2030.
What does it mean when the Cathedral of Learning is lit gold?
Pitt won. The top of the tower has been lit gold after football wins since 1983, with a blue beam added in 2018.
