Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
Sugar Bowl seats, ranked in one paragraph
For the Sugar Bowl, the best view is a Plaza-level (100s) sideline seat between the 20-yard lines, about row 15 or higher; the best value is the front of the 500-level Upper Box along a sideline; and the seats to skip are the upper Terrace end zones. This season the bowl stages a College Football Playoff semifinal, kicking off Friday night, January 15, 2027, at 7:30 Eastern (6:30 local time) inside the Caesars Superdome, with the winner advancing to the January 25 title game in Las Vegas.
The Superdome is fully enclosed, so sun, rain and cold are irrelevant. You are choosing purely on distance, height and price.
Plaza, Loge, Upper Box and Terrace explained
The Superdome opened in 1975 and seats roughly 73,208 for football and can stretch to about 76,468. Work starting in 2020 tore out the outside ramps in favor of atriums and enlarged the clubs and concourses.
Plaza level (100s)
The ring of seats nearest the turf. Mid-rows on the sideline put you close enough to hear the hitting and lift you clear of the benches. Front rows are lower than they look on a chart.
Loge level (200s and 300s)
Club seating in two tiers, sideline only. The 200s start about 35 rows above the field, with the 300s stacked above. This is the premium middle ground: club access and a high, full-field angle.
Upper Box (500s)
The first rows of the top deck, perched over the clubs. Sideline sections here give a clean, centered look at the whole field for well below Plaza or Loge demand. This is the value play.
Terrace (600s)
The sections rising behind the Upper Box, which climb past row 30. Sideline Terrace seats are workable; end zone Terrace seats are as far from the field as the building allows and best for simply being in the room.
The bowl assigns sidelines, and each school's ticket block tends to fill the stands behind its bench.
Bracket timing for a mid-January semifinal
The SEC is the Sugar Bowl's long-time partner, informally from 1935 and by contract from 1976, and since 2015 its non-playoff years have brought an SEC team and a Big 12 team together. In a semifinal year the bracket overrides all of that.
- Selection day, early December: the bracket shows which two quarterfinals feed New Orleans.
- Quarterfinal week (Dec. 30 and Jan. 1): those games are played, and both Sugar Bowl teams are set by New Year's night, two weeks before kickoff.
- Who travels: much of SEC country is within driving distance, and a school from the Gulf Coast region, or one whose fans follow it everywhere, can drain resale inventory fast.
A mid-January date also means an ordinary week on the calendar, which tends to free up more hotel rooms than a holiday game would, but leaves a short planning window if you wait for your team to advance. Reserved Seat orders carry a 100% guarantee, useful when you buy before the bracket settles.
As a New Year's Six bowl, it shares playoff hosting with five others on a rotating three-year schedule. After quarterfinals to open both 2025 and 2026, it returns to quarterfinal duty on New Year's Eve 2027. The playoff format is fixed only through the 2026 season.
Tailgate Town, the parade and Sugar Bowl Fest
Around the game, the Sugar Bowl Committee stages a parade, a fan festival called Sugar Bowl Fest and Tailgate Town, its pregame hangout. Expect the timing to differ for a mid-January semifinal; the bowl posts dates after the bracket comes out.
The committee works year-round, hosting golf, sailing, tennis, swimming, volleyball and youth soccer events, and handing out the Eddie Robinson, James J. Corbett and Manning awards. The city fills in the rest, with the French Quarter, the Warehouse District and downtown hotels a walk or short streetcar ride away.
Walking, streetcars and Superdome rules
- Walk if you can. The Superdome is at 1500 Sugar Bowl Drive in the Central Business District, and plenty of CBD and French Quarter hotels are within walking distance.
- Streetcar: board the Loyola line at Union Passenger Terminal, beside the stadium; its stops include Julia, Poydras and Canal, the transfer point for the Canal line.
- Parking and rideshare: major events sell garage and lot spaces ahead of time. Saints games have used a rideshare zone on Poydras between Loyola and Carondelet; the bowl may differ.
- Flights: Louis Armstrong New Orleans International is the airport. Seats on flights shrink quickly once the matchup is known.
- Bags and payments: during the 2025 season the stadium accepted a clear bag no bigger than 12 x 6 x 12 inches, a clear gallon freezer bag, or a 4.5 x 6.5-inch clutch; tickets were mobile and the building was cashless. Review the Superdome's visitor information before you go.
Tulane Stadium, Katrina and nine decades of Sugar Bowls
Tulane beat Temple 20–14 in the first Sugar Bowl, on January 1, 1935, at Tulane Stadium, the game's home through 1974. It moved into the new Superdome in 1975 and has left the city only once: Hurricane Katrina sent the January 2006 game to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, where West Virginia edged Georgia by three, 38–35. January 1 or 2 is the normal date, though four editions in the 1970s fell on New Year's Eve, and the January 2025 quarterfinal was delayed 24 hours over security concerns following a deadly attack downtown in the early hours of New Year's Day.
- 1973: Notre Dame slipped past Alabama 24–23 in front of 85,161, still the record.
- 1983: Penn State won 27–23 against Georgia.
- 2004: LSU won the BCS championship 21–14 over Oklahoma.
- January 2015: Ohio State knocked off Alabama 42–35 in a semifinal during the playoff's first season.
- January 2024: Washington held off Texas 37–31 in a semifinal.
- January 2026: in a quarterfinal, Ole Miss beat Georgia 39–34.
Two more playoff semifinals were played here, to open 2018 and 2021. Title sponsors: USF&G Financial Services from 1987 to 1995, Nokia from 1996 to 2006 and Allstate since 2007.
Frequently asked questions
Are Superdome front rows good for the Sugar Bowl?
Not especially. The lowest Plaza rows sit behind the sideline crowd; about row 15 and up on the sideline gives a better view of the whole field.
What time is the 2027 Sugar Bowl semifinal?
The listed start is 7:30 Eastern (6:30 in New Orleans) on Friday night, January 15, 2027.
Where are the best value seats in the Superdome?
Sideline seats at the front of the Upper Box (the 500s). They look down over the clubs at the middle of the field and draw less demand than seats below.
When will I know who is playing in the Sugar Bowl?
By the night of January 1, 2027, after the quarterfinals that feed the game. The bracket released in early December narrows it to the winners of two specific games.
Why was the 2006 Sugar Bowl in Atlanta?
The Superdome was out of action after Hurricane Katrina, so that game moved to Atlanta's Georgia Dome. West Virginia beat Georgia 38 to 35.
Is the Sugar Bowl still tied to the SEC?
In non-playoff years an SEC team has met a Big 12 team. In a semifinal season like this one, the playoff bracket decides the teams.
