Upcoming Virginia Tech Hokies Football dates
Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.
Pick your Lane Stadium seat before Enter Sandman
The best all-around seat for Virginia Tech Hokies Football is a west-sideline seat between the 30-yard lines, in the middle rows of the lower deck. Lane Stadium, the 65,632-seat open-air home of the Hokies in Blacksburg, Virginia, puts its press box, club seats and suites on that side, and the west stands keep the afternoon sun at your back.
If that seat is out of reach, these are the next calls:
- East sideline: the same angle on the field, with the sun in your eyes late in a day game. The visitors' locker room is on this side.
- End zones next to the students: the loudest seats in the building, for fans who came for the noise.
- South end zone or upper corners: the lower-cost way in, with a flatter look at the far end of the field.
Home games are mostly Saturdays, plus some weeknight television dates, from late August or early September through late November. The Hokies have played in the Atlantic Coast Conference since 2004.
West stands, east stands and the north end
Lane Stadium opened on September 24, 1965, and grew in stages. Before the 2002 season the south end zone was closed in with 11,120 seats, and a west-side project finished in 2006 added the suites, club seating and today's press box. The field itself, Worsham Field, is natural grass laid out north to south.
The west side
Premium seating, the press box and the most shade in an afternoon game. Middle rows beat the front rows here; the first few rows sit behind the bench area, where players and staff stand in your sightline.
The east side
The same distance from the field, usually at a lower premium. Late in a day game you face the sun as it drops into the western sky. For a night game, the east side is an easy trade.
The north end zone
Students fill the bleachers here, entering through Gate 7, which the athletics department lists as student general admission only. ESPN ranked Lane second on its 2007 list of the scariest places to play, and this end is the reason. Sit beside it if you want to stand and shout; sit on a sideline far from it if you want calm.
Cold and wind
Blacksburg is a mountain town in southwest Virginia, and November night kickoffs can turn cold fast. Bring layers whatever side you choose.
Reading a Lane Stadium listing after the renumbering
Virginia Tech renumbered the stadium's sections and seats into sequential order so fans could find their way more easily. Rows did not change. That matters when you shop:
- An older seating chart or a screenshot from a past season may show section numbers that no longer match the gate signs.
- Compare any listing against the athletics department's current Lane Stadium seating maps before you buy.
- If a seller describes a location in old terms, ask which side and which yard line instead of relying on the number.
Published section ranges by side were not available in the sources for this page, so judge a listing by its position on the current map rather than by a number pattern.
Hokies opponents that empty the resale shelves
Lane Stadium had logged 116 sellouts through November 2023, so even ordinary ACC games draw well. These opponents push demand highest:
- Virginia: the in-state series began in 1895 and has been played every year since 1970, alternating between Lane Stadium and Scott Stadium. The prize is the Commonwealth Cup, and the game also counts toward the wider Commonwealth Clash between the schools. Virginia Tech leads the series.
- Miami: a yearly opponent since 1992, first in the Big East and then the ACC, and the visitor behind many of the program's biggest nights.
- West Virginia: the Black Diamond Trophy game ran every year from 1973 to 2005 and returns only now and then, so a meeting is a scarce ticket.
- Boston College and Georgia Tech: ACC rivals shaped by division races, including two ACC Championship Game meetings with Boston College.
A prime-time kickoff or any ranked visitor adds to the crowd. Early-season games against smaller non-conference programs are the easiest and least costly way to see the place.
Donor priority, student allotments and the resale route
The athletics ticket office sells season tickets, single games and mini-plans. The strongest season locations generally go to donors to the athletics fund, ranked by years of giving, and students draw from their own north end allotment.
For Virginia, Miami, a ranked team or a night game, very little public inventory is left once season and student tickets are placed. Resale is how most fans get into those games, and prices react to the opponent, the kickoff slot, the team's form that year and, close to game day, the weather forecast.
- Highest demand: lower-deck sideline seats and west-side club seats.
- Middle: upper sideline and the south end zone.
- Lowest: north end seats near the students and upper corners.
Every Reserved Seat order is backed by a 100% guarantee.
Clear bags, lots and Blacksburg Transit (2026)
As of the 2026 season, the athletics department's fan guide lists these rules. Policies change, so check the Lane Stadium fan guide before game day.
- Bags: clear plastic, vinyl or PVC up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear freezer bag, plus a small clutch of about 4.5 by 6.5 inches. Backpacks, purses, coolers and fanny packs stay outside.
- Gates: open two hours before kickoff, with no re-entry.
- Comfort: seat cushions without arms or backs are allowed.
- Alcohol: sales stop at the end of the third quarter.
- Tailgating: public and donor lots open at 7 a.m. on Saturday game days, RV spaces open early Friday, and tents must be down by noon the next day. Propane and charcoal grills are fine; open flames are not.
Blacksburg Transit runs free expanded service on game days, which beats a long walk from remote parking. Traffic out of town after a sellout is slow, so many fans tailgate after the game and leave later. Hotels within a short drive fill early for the big dates; book once the schedule is out.
Skipper, Hokie Stone and the Beamer years
The moment to be in your seat for is the team's entrance. Since 2000 the Hokies have taken the field to Metallica's Enter Sandman, the whole stadium jumping in time, and each player taps a slab of Hokie Stone, the limestone used across campus, on the way out. Miss kickoff by a few minutes and you miss the best part of the day. Skipper, a cannon built in 1963 by cadets led by Homer Hickam and billed as the largest of its kind used at games, fires during home games.
The program played its first game on October 21, 1892, and has won more than 700 games. Early teams were the Gobblers; the Hokie Bird and the Hokies name, from the Old Hokie cheer, took over in the early 1980s. Frank Beamer, an alumnus who coached from 1987 to 2015, built the modern team: 23 straight bowl games, a Sugar Bowl win over Texas after the 1995 season, and an 11–0 regular season in 1999 that sent Michael Vick and the Hokies to the 2000 Sugar Bowl for the BCS national title. The run of 27 consecutive bowl trips, from the 1993 Independence Bowl to the 2019 Belk Bowl, is one of the longest in the sport.
Beamerball, the habit of winning with blocked kicks and special-teams scores, became the team's signature, alongside Bud Foster's Lunch Pail defense, named for a beat-up lunch pail carried to the sideline each week. Virginia Tech claims 11 conference championships across four leagues, including an ACC title in its first ACC season.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best side of Lane Stadium for a day game?
The west sideline. The field runs north to south, so the west stands have the afternoon sun behind them, and that side also holds the club seats and press box.
Do old Lane Stadium section numbers still work?
Not reliably. Virginia Tech renumbered sections and seats into sequential order while keeping rows the same, so check any listing against the current seating maps.
Where do Virginia Tech students sit?
Students use the north end zone bleachers and enter through Gate 7. If you want a quieter game, choose a sideline section away from that end.
How early should you arrive for Enter Sandman?
Be seated several minutes before kickoff. Gates open two hours ahead as of the 2026 season, and the team runs out to the song just before the opening kick.
Which Hokies home games are hardest to get into?
Virginia, Miami, a ranked visitor and prime-time games. With little public inventory left after season and student tickets, resale is the usual route for those dates.
