Oklahoma State Cowboys Football Tickets

Sit south side for day games · east-west field · about 52,200 seats

Boone Pickens Stadium runs east to west, so the sidelines face north and south. That one fact decides where you should sit for Cowboys football.

Boone Pickens Stadium seats: the quick call

For an afternoon Oklahoma State game, sit in the south grandstand between the 30-yard lines, roughly 15 to 35 rows up. The field at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater runs east to west, so the south side keeps the sun behind you while the north side squints into it. For a night game, either sideline works and the choice comes down to price.

The stadium seats about 52,000 (the university lists 52,202 after a 2017 project widened the seats), and the home season runs from early September through late November.

North grandstand or south grandstand

Most major college stadiums point north and south. This one has pointed east and west since 1920, when the field was turned to reduce the effect of the strong prevailing winds on the plains. Among Big 12 stadiums, it is the only one set up this way.

That orientation makes the two long sides the north and south grandstands, with the 50-yard line in the middle of each. On a fall afternoon the sun hangs low in the southern and western sky:

  • South grandstand: sun at your back, the more comfortable choice for a September day game.
  • North grandstand: facing the sun and glare for much of an afternoon kickoff.
  • Night games: no sun factor at all, so pick on view and budget.

Glare also affects the field: the team defending the east goal can have the sun in its eyes, which is part of the stadium's home-field character.

Rows, end zones and the arena wall

Two details make this stadium unusual once you are inside.

The field is unusually close

After the 1971 season the cinder running track came out and the field was lowered, which left one of the smallest gaps between the stands and the sideline anywhere in college football. Lower sideline rows feel right on top of play. The trade-off is that the first few rows sit low enough for players and staff to block parts of the field, so rows in the teens and higher usually see more.

Two very different end zones

  • East end zone: the face of Gallagher-Iba Arena, the basketball venue, forms this end, and a large video board was mounted on it in 2018. Sitting in the east end means the board is behind you.
  • West end zone: rebuilt with the Pickens gift, with the Ring of Honor above it. Fans here look straight at the big board in the arena facade, so this is the better end for replays.

The university lists 111 suites and roughly 3,500 club seats.

Seats by goal: view, comfort, noise or budget

  • For the clearest view: either sideline between the 30s, about 15 to 35 rows up, high enough to watch plays develop without losing detail.
  • For comfort in early-season heat: the south grandstand, out of the afternoon glare.
  • For noise and energy: the northwest corner. The student section is there, and the Cowboys run out through the black iron chute gate in front of it, which makes it the loudest corner of the building.
  • For the lowest cost: end-zone and corner seats, with the west end preferred for its view of the video board.
  • For premium space: club seats and suites, sold mainly as season packages, though single club seats occasionally appear on resale.

There is no single large visitor block in practice. Road fans tend to buy wherever resale inventory exists, so end zones and upper rows are often mixed for big conference games.

Opponents that fill Stillwater

Bedlam, the series with Oklahoma, defines the program. The first meeting, at Island Park in Guthrie, is remembered for a punt that blew backward into a half-frozen creek, and the Cowboys' 44–10 win in 2011 clinched their only Big 12 title. Oklahoma moved to the SEC in 2024, and the 2023 game was the last one scheduled. Any future meeting would be a major event, so watch the schedule rather than assume one is coming.

Tulsa visits from time to time. Oklahoma State has dominated the series, but Tulsa won in Stillwater in 2025, its first win there since 1951.

Within the Big 12, demand runs highest for:

  • Texas Tech, Baylor, TCU and Houston, whose fans can drive to Stillwater;
  • any ranked visitor, especially in November with a title race in play;
  • homecoming, when alumni pack the town;
  • night kickoffs, which add atmosphere and remove the sun question.

September non-conference games are usually the easiest and least expensive.

Arrive early for The Walk and the Spirit Rider

The athletic department lists several pregame and in-game rituals that reward an early arrival.

  • The Walk: roughly two hours and 15 minutes before kickoff, players walk Hester Street to the stadium behind the Cowboy Marching Band and spirit squad, between rows of fans.
  • Bullet and the Spirit Rider: a rider carrying the OSU flag leads the team out on horseback, then gallops to the 30-yard line after each touchdown.
  • The Waving Song: fans rise and wave one arm to the school song, which dates to 1908, after scores and wins.
  • Pistol Pete: the mascot, based on Frank Eaton, a deputy U.S. marshal from nearby Perkins.
  • The Paddle People: since the early 1990s, students have pounded orange paddles reading Pokes on the walls ringing the field.

Lots around campus fill with tailgaters, and the university promotes a free park-and-ride shuttle from downtown Stillwater. As of the 2026 season, general gates open 90 minutes before kickoff (two hours for suite and club holders) and there is no re-entry.

Buying Cowboys tickets and getting through the gate

Season ticket holders fill most of the stadium. Donor giving to Oklahoma State athletics decides who gets the best sideline seats, and priority grows with both giving level and years of membership. Students have a separate allocation in their section.

As a result, the single-game seats the university sells for big games tend to be in less desirable areas, while season holders who skip a game list theirs for resale. For a marquee opponent, a ranked matchup or homecoming, resale is usually the only realistic route to a sideline seat; for September non-conference games, resale prices tend to ease as kickoff nears. Reserved Seat backs every order with a 100% guarantee.

As of the 2026 season, each fan may carry one clear plastic bag no larger than 12 by 6 by 12 inches, or one clutch up to 6 by 9 inches. Cushions up to 16 inches wide are permitted if they have no back or metal frame. Tobacco and vaping are prohibited on university property, and there are no ATMs inside. Confirm the rules in the Oklahoma State A–Z stadium guide, since they change.

Stillwater sits between Oklahoma City and Tulsa, and hotels in town sell out for big games. Many visitors stay in one of the two cities and drive in, allowing extra time on the two-lane roads into town.

From Oklahoma A&M to the Big 12

The program began in 1901, when the school was Oklahoma A&M, and the Oklahoma State name arrived in 1957. After stints in the Southwest Conference, the Missouri Valley Conference and the Big Eight, it became a founding member of the Big 12 in 1996. Its national title claim rests on the 1945 team, which went 9–0, beat Saint Mary's in the Sugar Bowl and was awarded the AFCA championship retroactively in 2016.

The late 1980s brought Thurman Thomas and then Barry Sanders, whose 1988 season of 2,628 rushing yards and 39 touchdowns set college records at the time and won the school's only Heisman Trophy. From 2005 to 2025, Mike Gundy became the winningest coach in school history; his 2011 team won the Big 12 and then beat Stanford in overtime in the Fiesta Bowl, finishing No. 3, the program's highest final ranking. The stadium itself was called Lewis Field until 2003.
