SHI Stadium seats: where to start
Cheering for the home team? Buy on the east side or in the north end, between the 20-yard lines if budget allows, and avoid the west-side block set aside for visitors. Following the visitors? Your block is on the west sideline: lower sections 105–110 and upper sections 207–214. The 52,454-seat stadium stands on Rutgers' Busch Campus in Piscataway, New Jersey, overlooking the Raritan River with New Brunswick on the far bank. Home Saturdays start near Labor Day and run through November.
One quirk: in a day game the west sideline stays out of the sun, so the visitors hold the more comfortable side.
Section numbers, gates and who sits where
The stadium opened in 1994 where the 1938 Rutgers Stadium once stood. The original layout was a U with the south end left open; the 2008–2009 expansion filled that gap with about 11,500 seats and a large video board. The playing field points north and south. Rutgers Athletics' 2026 gate guide lists lower sections 101 to 144 and upper sections 201 to 230, grouped by gate:
- West Gate: sections 101–104, 144 and 201–206, plus the visitor sections 105–110 and 207–214. The press box sits on this side.
- North Gate: sections 111–128 and 217–223, the north end.
- East Gate: sections 129–131 and 224–230 and the club. The east mezzanine holds 968 loge and club seats.
- South Gate: the student sections, 132–142, in the south end zone.
Both sidelines carry an upper deck holding roughly 5,000 fans apiece. Enter through your section's own gate and you avoid a long lap around the concourse. Seats beside the student block are loud and on their feet most of the game, which suits some fans and not others.
Sideline height, end zones and sun in Piscataway
- Lower sideline, middle rows: the best way to read the game. The first five or so rows sit low behind the bench areas, so middle rows beat front rows here.
- Upper decks: high, but with a clean view of the entire field from either sideline.
- End zones: the cheapest seats in the house; you feel close only when a drive reaches your end.
Because of the north-south layout, afternoon sun lands on the faces of east-side fans while the west sideline keeps it at their backs. Early-season day games favor the west side, and night games cancel the difference.
Big Ten visitors, the blackout and Rutgers' hottest dates
Rutgers and Princeton, the two schools that started the sport, stopped playing each other in football in 1980. Today the Big Ten and nearby opponents set the demand.
- The Big Ten's traveling giants: the Nittany Lions, Buckeyes and Wolverines draw the biggest crowds, because their fans live within driving distance or travel in large numbers. Expect many visiting colors in the stands.
- Maryland: a protected annual Big Ten matchup through at least 2028 that often closes the regular season.
- The blackout game: every year since 2011, Rutgers has worn all black for one home game. The 2025 blackout against Iowa drew 55,942, the stadium record, with crowds exceeding the listed seat count.
- Former Big East rivals: Syracuse and Temple still stir regional interest when they appear.
Resale prices climb for headline conference opponents, games under the lights and seasons when Rutgers opens well. Early-season non-conference games are the easiest and least expensive.
Scarlet Walk, the cannon and tailgating rules
- The Scarlet Walk: before each home game, players pass through a corridor of fans and touch the First Game statue honoring the 1869 contest.
- The cannon: it fires after each Rutgers touchdown and when a win is final.
- R-U: a call-and-response chant, with half the crowd shouting R and the other half answering U.
Under the athletics department's 2026 rules, lots open five hours ahead of kickoff; they clear at dusk after a day game and two hours after the final whistle at night. R Fund donors with high priority points get season parking first, and everyone else parks on a first-arrival basis on game day. No kegs, no open flames and no tent larger than 10 feet square.
Taking the train to Piscataway and getting inside
If you would rather not drive, the train is a practical option. Ride NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor line to New Brunswick, walk to the corner of George and Albany streets next to the station, and board the free university shuttle, which drops fans at the stadium's South Entrance on River Road. In 2026 the buses begin running three hours ahead of kickoff. If you park at the Jersey Mike's Arena lots or the outer Busch lots, campus shuttles bring you in at no charge. Routes can shift between seasons, so review the Rutgers shuttle page on game week.
Rutgers publishes a new bag policy each season, and sizes and types can change, so review the latest Rutgers Athletics bag policy while you pack. Every gate also has weapons detection screening in 2026, so build in more time for entry.
How Scarlet Knights tickets are sold
- Season tickets: first in line for seats and parking. Priority points rank holders and donors, which puts veteran R Fund members at the front.
- Student tickets: set aside for enrolled students in the south end zone block.
- Single-game tickets: available once renewals close, with donors offered the best of them first.
Every Rutgers home ticket is mobile; printed and PDF tickets are not accepted. That keeps resale simple, since the seller transfers the ticket straight to your phone. Most games have resale seats on offer until kickoff. When a conference heavyweight visits, the prime sideline listings come mainly from season holders, and selection peaks several weeks before the game. Reserved Seat covers each order with a 100% guarantee.
1869, two unbeaten seasons and a Big Ten move
College football starts here. Rutgers defeated Princeton 6–4 on November 6, 1869, playing on a College Avenue field in New Brunswick, and that game is credited as the first between two colleges. It looked more like soccer or rugby than modern football, and Princeton took the second game 8–0, yet Rutgers lists itself as a co-champion for 1869.
- Perfect seasons: an unbeaten 1961 team (9–0) and an unbeaten 1976 team (11–0). The program's first bowl came in the 1978 Garden State Bowl.
- 2006: a 28–25 Thursday-night comeback over No. 3 Louisville, remembered as Pandemonium in Piscataway, pushed the Scarlet Knights to seventh in the AP rankings, and the 11–2 season closed with a Texas Bowl victory over Kansas State, the school's first bowl win. Rutgers shared the Big East title in 2012 and met Notre Dame in the 2013 Pinstripe Bowl.
- 2014: after years in the Big East (renamed the American Athletic Conference), Rutgers joined the Big Ten, putting Michigan, Penn State and Ohio State into the home rotation.
The stadium has carried several names: Rutgers Stadium, then High Point Solutions Stadium (2011), HighPoint.com Stadium (2018) and, since 2019, SHI Stadium. Staffs and rosters change every year, so look up the current lineup on the team site.
