Upcoming Orange Bowl dates

Dates and live ticket listings appear here as soon as they are on sale. The guide below covers what to know before you buy.

Orange Bowl seats: the fast answer

For the Orange Bowl, the best football view is a 100-level sideline seat between the 20-yard lines, and the smartest value is an upper-level midfield seat in the 300s. Next up is a College Football Playoff semifinal, kicking off Thursday, January 14, 2027, at 7:30 p.m. Eastern in Miami Gardens, Florida. The winner moves on to the title game in Las Vegas, at Allegiant Stadium, on January 25, 2027.

A night kickoff in mid-January takes sun out of the equation, and the stadium's canopy covers most seats, so your decision comes down to angle, distance and price. Steer clear of the lowest end zone rows.

Hard Rock Stadium sections, level by level

Built in 1987 and first named Joe Robbie Stadium, the venue now seats about 64,767 for football. Its 2015–2016 overhaul added a canopy over the large majority of seats, which shades the bowl by day and keeps most fans dry in a shower. In a real downpour, the first rows down low may still get wet.

Lower level (100s)

Midfield on the north side means sections 117 to 121, and 118 sits right on the 50. Across the field, look for 144 to 148. These are the most sought-after seats in the building.

Club level (200s)

Club seats with access to indoor lounges. A comfortable choice for a long playoff night, with a mid-height view.

Upper level (300s)

Sections 318 through 321 are among the midfield options up top. From up here, routes and coverages are easy to read, and the canopy is overhead.

End zones

The west end runs roughly 102 to 106, the east end roughly 130 to 134. Low rows here have the weakest football view and the most exposure to rain.

Those numbers are drawn from an independent guide to Miami Dolphins seating, and the bowl uses the same stadium layout. Each school receives a ticket block, so its supporters tend to fill the stands behind whichever sideline the bowl gives that team.

Buying a semifinal before you know the teams

A semifinal has no teams until the quarterfinals are played. This season's feeder games are the Fiesta Bowl (December 30, 2026) plus the Cotton, Peach and Rose bowls (all January 1, 2027). By New Year's night, about 13 days before kickoff, the Orange Bowl pairing is locked.

  • Early buyers lock in a seat without knowing the schools, though the bracket published on selection day narrows the field to the winners of two specific quarterfinals.
  • Late buyers know exactly who is playing, though resale supply usually tightens as soon as two road-tripping fan bases start buying.
  • Distance shapes demand. Southeastern schools, and programs known for large road followings, push the market harder than two distant teams.

For buyers who commit early, Reserved Seat orders include guaranteed entry. This bowl belongs to the New Year's Six, the group of premier bowls that rotate playoff duty; four of them stage quarterfinals and two stage semifinals each season on a three-year rotation. It staged a quarterfinal to open 2026 and is slated for semifinals on January 14, 2027, and January 13, 2028. The current playoff format runs only through the 2026 season.

Game week in South Florida

Game week, as the nonprofit Orange Bowl Committee describes it, includes a Fan Fest, a pep rally parade and a prayer breakfast. Through the fall the committee also hosts community events, among them a golf classic, cheer championships and a beach run in December. Schedules change annually; the committee posts details after the pairing is announced.

The old Orange Bowl Parade is gone. It ran from 1936 to 2001, reportedly drew up to half a million spectators at its 1970s peak, and ended in 2002 after audiences shrank.

Parking, rail and the stadium rulebook

  • Prepay your parking. Big events at this stadium are prepaid-parking only, with lots opening several hours ahead. Dolphins rules permit gas or charcoal grills within your space and ban open fires; check what applies to the bowl.
  • Rideshare has been routed to Lot 44, roughly 25 minutes on foot from the gates.
  • Brightline: the stadium has run a free shuttle from the Aventura station for Dolphins games. Check whether it operates for the bowl.
  • Airports: The stadium is roughly halfway from Miami to Fort Lauderdale, which makes either city's airport (MIA or FLL) and either city's hotels a reasonable base.
  • Rules: as of the 2025 season, only clear bags were allowed, capped at 12 x 6 x 12 inches, umbrellas and aerosol sunscreen were banned, and the stadium was cashless. Check the current rules in the Hard Rock Stadium A-Z guide.

From Miami Field to the playoff era

The first game, on January 1, 1935, was played at Miami Field, where Bucknell shut out Miami 26–0 in front of 5,134. From 1938 until January 1996 the game lived in the Miami Orange Bowl stadium, then relocated to the Dolphins' home starting with the December 1996 game. An NFL scheduling conflict sent the January 1999 game back to the old venue one last time. The largest crowd, 81,753, watched Nebraska and Miami on January 1, 1995.

  • January 1965: Texas held off Joe Namath's Alabama 21–17 in the first bowl shown live in prime time.
  • January 1984: Miami upset top-ranked Nebraska 31–30.
  • December 2021: Georgia beat Michigan 34–11 in a playoff semifinal.
  • January 2025: Notre Dame edged Penn State 27–24 in a semifinal during the debut season of the 12-team format.
  • January 2026: Oregon blanked Texas Tech 23–0 in a quarterfinal.

National championships were settled here five times (1994, 1995, 1998, 2001, 2005), and playoff semifinals were held here at the end of both 2015 and 2018. Its conference ties sent the Big Eight (later Big 12) champion to Miami from 1954 to 1996 and to the ACC from 1999, though the playoff bracket now overrides them in semifinal years. Title sponsors have included FedEx from 1989 to 2010 and Discover from 2011 into early 2014; Capital One took over late that year.
